ajm200
Hi, I know that there as been a bit of a baby boom on this forum lately so I was wondering if anyone has tried the kari-me baby sling: www.kari-me.com. It looks really comfy for baby but quite complicated to put on. It's like the one used on the C4 programme bringing up baby. The drawback is that they can't be bought on the highstreet so it's not easy to try before you buy plus a true road test would involve borrowing a baby - not too easy I want a baby sling that allows me to carry baby securely at my son's various playgroups and clubs while keeping my hands free to keep him out of mischief as he is a very active young man. I also want a discreet way to breastfeed the baby as some of these clubs are frequented by a fair number of dads. Any advice or recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks Amanda
Snowy
I used a perraja The Carrying Kind It looks quite similar, but not as long as the one you are looking at. Basically just a long piece of fabric,no armholes or fasteners of any kind. It was fabulous - once you've got the hang of knotting it correctly! I used it all the time for my middle one (not so much for last one but can't remember why!) And when they are toddling you can use it as a long scarf and they just climb in for a supported hip ride when they get tied. When he was tiny,I used it round the shops - he would always fall asleep on the way and it was great to be able to carry him, still asleep, in the sling, and still have hands free to push a shopping trolley round! Lesley
I bought my daughter the Maya Wrap Sling when Lauren was born. We used them for both Lauren and Jake - very handy when you need both hands free, so more useful for carrying a second child whilst trying to control a toddler She found it very useful when breast-feeding in public places - and you can even get to eat some food yourself, at the same time! Very discreet, with the use of a muslin square or a thin blanket.
Ziggy
I used the Kari-me for DD4 and loved it... she literally lived in it for the first 8 months of her life, she was happy nowhere else... It's not that hard to manage, although the instructions appear complicated, once you've tried knotting it a few times you can do it in a matter of seconds, and mostly you'd always carry your baby in the same way, why keep changing the knots and positions if you find one you're really comfy with? The Kari-me is a lovely fabric, it really wraps around the baby well and gives strong but flexible support, which is particularly lovely for baby's little head. It's a light fabric too, worked well in summer, and also is easy to adjust on/around your shoulder as you find most comfortable for you... I'd really recommend it, it was a fantastic carrier... Goosey Lucy
I used a Wilkinet sling for both my boys. Hubby also used it and loved the closeness when carrying the boys around.
bronze
I have a few slings. My favourite when very small (tiny) was a freedom sling http://www.freedomslings.co.uk/ Then I mmoved onto a pouch type sling (homemade) forgotton the name. then I moved onto a wrap sling (again home made) The wrap sling looks fairly similar and to be honest I wouldnt shell out for a sling at all but make one. they're not even dificult to make generally justa length of cloth. Its all in the wrapping/folding which takes practice.
ajm200
I would consider making one if I was any good at sewing. My mum was a seamstress years ago and has had many attempts at teaching me. I can do cross-stitch but get into a mess sewing a hem. I've owned two sewing machine and broke both.... I'm hopeless. I should have been a boy as I can do wood-work, gardening, wall papering, etc
ajm200
Thanks for all the replies. I'm glad you all liked your slings. I like the fact that the Kari-me can be used in so many different ways so I think I'll look at getting one next month. i want to get my scan out of the way before buying for baby as the scan is due on Friday 13th!
