lws
Hello, Have noticed one of my two pekin bantums has been a bit lathargic the past couple of days, and noticed this morning her crest and her dangly bits - sorry cant remember the name, are very pale, nearly white. My other pekin red bits are really red and perky. Do you think this is a sign of being unwell? I have read about various pick me up remedies you all use, can you remind me what i could give her please. thanks.
The Dogmother
It, yes, it usually a sign that all's not well. Do pick her up and look her over for any other signs of poorliness. I'd recommend a dose of poultry tonic (Omlet Shop) in their water and worming all of them as a first reaction. Keep an eye on her and see what develops; without any other signs it's difficult to know what its going on at this stage.
lws
My pekin is slowing getting worse, noticed yesterday her vent looks strange, like something pale and fleshy was protuding and lots of white muck stuck around her vent and feathers. Thought she might have an egg stuck or something, sat her in warm water several times yesterday. Hand fed her and made sure she has some water. Also gave her some olive oil which i had read might help to shift any blockage. This morning she seems worse, barely opening her eyes. Not sure what to do next, am new to this, any help please. Lou. Egluntyne
You need to take her to a vet. It sounds like a serious obstruction of some sort....either bowel or laying tackle. Sorry not to be more encouraging.
lws
Sorry to print some gloom, we lost our pekin over night. We think she had an obstruction, spoke to the vet late last night and there seemed nothing we could do. She died in her sleep. I hope its nothing i have done, we have only had the chickens a couple of months and its awful to lose one so soon. Lou
Egluntyne
Am very sorry to hear the news. There was nothing you could have done. These things happen sometimes.....not much comfort, I know. Please don't let this experience put you off keeping chickens. All the best.
