What makes a chicken coop easy to live with?

Well, all safe and well this morning.

 

Another question for you experienced keepers! My chickens are on a patch of the garden which has fairly long grass in places. Is this likely to be a problem - have read somewhere that might block the crop? Should I mow it and then put them back?

 

Any advice or experience stories appreciated!

If you do decide to mow,then make sure all the long bits are picked up, as its those that can impact a crop.

 

I think that they will just 'nibble' the long bits down rather than picking long strands to eat,so it should be OK.

I am sure someone with more Freerange experince will be along soon though.....

I tend to keep my grass fairly short to stop crop problems purely because my Eglu is on lawn and they also freerange.

 

If i was you-i'd mow it short and try atleast to remove all the clippings.

I'd say keep it short, and rake up all the clippings before replacing the eglu... long grass is why my Madge is currently very poorly with sour crop, and it doesn't look good.

My auntie and uncle used to keep chickens in their orchard and never mowed the grass, just went in with a scythe once or twice a summer! Both dead now, so can't ask them!! I have put mine in the orchard and was not intending to mow, but now you've got me thinking!!

I would mow it.

 

It's not worth the risk.

 

Once you have cut it, the hens will keep it short for you.
