Can anybody tell me if its ok to let the chickens eat the wild bird feed? The contents are :

Sunflower seeds, wheat and yellow millet.

Too many sunflower seeds are not good for them. Too fatty.

Mine hover under the bird table in the hope that the wild birds will knock some off. They're usually successful

I give my girls some every now & then. They don't like mixed corn, you see, (!) & I like them to have something to scratch around for. Fussy girls

I heard that some wild bird food mixes contain rape seed which makes hen's eggs taste fishy - so best avoided

Mine are always hovering under the bird table and scoffing up all the seed that drops with no ill effects, saves me weeding when the bloomin stuff starts to grow! They even drink from the bird bath!

I bought a bag of Woolworths value wild bird seed - it had pumpkin, sunflower, wheat and something else in. I used it as a treat - when mine have been out of the run, I usually take something to bribe them to go back in, and a handful of this chucked in was very popular.

 

Egluntine is right about the seeds, but if you use this as an occasional treat it should be fine.

Mine tend to hang around the bird feeder. They normally see any birds off that venture into the garden, unless the birds are on the feeder.........I think the birds have to pay the price by knocking food to the ground .......
