Chickens & a cat

Recommended Posts

Every time someone on here has asked about can chickens live OK alongside cats everyone else tells stories of how well theres get on. I always say one of our cats is scared of the chickens and the other has tried chasing them and I wouldn't trust him.

On Friday I was sitting in the garden looking at the chickens when suddenly they all started trying to fly and were flapping and bok-boking like anything - they had got close to the Omlet netting and the evil cat made a grab at them and there was a huge pile of feathers where he had obviously caught nutmeg.

Luckily she seems unharmed (apart from the missing feathers) and didn't stop laying at all. Now I am watching him even closer - he attacked when both myself and hubby were in the garden.

I have found the cat sitting in their run a couple of times when they have been out on the grass with me - so I think he is proving me correct in not trusting him.

You're absolutely right Taj. Our first tabby used to chase alsatians & we saw a woman pick her terrier up one day to prevent an altercation  He was a stone in weight and a bruiser.

Rascal, however, has always been the total opposite. He's now 11 years old and has always valued chilling out more than chasing anything. We've often caught him in the garden with the doves happily pecking the ground nearby and he's never responded.

It really is down to the individual personality.

Yes its so important to know thy self & trust thine instincts :),as Sue said its good to read everyones perspectives as "Ooops, word censored!"ody wants to be lured into a false sense of security ..all cats (&dogs) will be different towards chooks, as we all are :) My 3 cats are soooo cute & lovely as family pets but out their in their real world they're very different, all tyrants of sorts . . . :0

two of ours absolutely ignore the chickens, unless they get a bit too close then they flee...( the cats flee ) hmmm whereas Little Cat . .. now she's a different character altogether - uses her 9 nine lives daily!! She likes to think she'd .. ahem . .'ave'em' .but then last minute realises actually they're quite big & takes a quick diversion . .the chooks are getting used to her & her antics & i'm sure one day soon if i'm not chasing the L.C. away they will!!!! But i still keep my eye on her just incase!
