She's going to do it - I know she is!

 

We let the girls out in their part of the garden for the first time on saturday - admittedly its not massive but there's room to stretch their legs. However, Daisy's found the top of the eglu! Well, the top of the run to be precise, despite having had both of her wings clipped. It really isn't funny being eye level with a chook when you've just stood up from planting your radishes!

 

Am now very apprehensive about letting them out of the pen just in case she manages to clear the netting. I've got some sunflower canes and am planning to put some more netting up with them to hopefully put her off actually clearing the top of the netting..

 

Daisy does seem to have her mad moments. She's too young too lay and seems to love rushing around the run with her feathers fluffed up, then sulking cos the other two ignore her - she's a classic teenager! PLEASE tell me she'll calm down when she starts to lay!

Oh she's a character alright Phonix!

 

She won't come near me, frightens herself with her own shadow, runs back to the eglu if so much as a breeze brushes her feathers and is generally as mad as a hatter! But, we love her all the same....

i have found all of mine calmed down when they started laying. Hopefully Daisy will too. Fingers crossed!

Hi i noticed you said you cliped both her wings we were advised to only clip one as it puts them off ballance when they try to take off.

Ours have also settled now they are all laying enjoy.

Charlotte's favourite place is on top of the run! We try to keep the run away from the edge of the Omlet netting just in case she gets any mad aviator ideas. She just seems to like being up there.

As Clive said, the point of wing clipping is to unbalance the hen which stops her flying.

If you clip both wings, she'll have to work harder at it, but theoretically could still get lift off

Hi All

 

I was asked when I got the girls if I wanted their wings clipped and I said yes, I should have been more specific at the time and said just one wing. Being so excited, a newbie etc, I didn't...

 

Have been out and erected more netting to put her off, fingers crossed!

My three all get up and down from the top of the eglu on a daily basis and quite often I have three on the top at once - and yes one has then flown over the top of the Omlet netting (with 1 clipped wing) from the Eglu run.

 

Now I just make sure the netting is well away from the Eglu and actually I think she scared herself because she got out then couldn't get back to the others, so it hasn't happened again.
