Funny looking chicken 2

Recommended Posts

Have just found Roxy in the Omlet netting WITH the chickens. She was scoffing their layers porridge while the hens looked on in amazement. Not looking forward to the aftermath from that little lot - looks like she was on the second bowl by the time I caught her... :vom:

Would have taken a picture but DD had hysterics and rushed over to pick her up before the evil killer chickens got her :anxious:

Ah well took Hyacinth's mind off madness and mayhem for a bit..

What gorgeous girls - the pics are fab! :D:D I'm trying to convince hubbie-to-be that the girls will be ok to be let out into the garden, he's seen your pics and is thinking about it! (don't hold your breath - he's not known for making quick decisions, he reminds me of an Ent in the Lord of the Rings!) :D:D

Thanks Lisa. One word of warning - the garden pictures are when the girls first arrived. They were fine pootling about for the first couple of weeks and didn't do any damage. In fact they were positively good gardeners BUT... after a couple of weeks they did start to systematically dig up everything except the shrubs. That's when we started restricting them with the Omlet netting to bits of the garden we didn't mind them digging up.

Fortunately they don't seem that bothered about grass as long as they have a bit of flower bed to scratch in.

Surferdog, I hope you don't mind me asking and digressing from your posting, but where do you get your chicken supplies from - you are only a few miles away from me. We thought we might check out the new SCATS superstore in Winchester, but it is a bit of a trek (the Chineham one is quite small and it's been a while since I visited there)! The saddlery up the road here does the bedding, but not birdy feedstuff - or any of the health bits apart from the mite powder.

Hi Koojie, I'm still on the stuff I ordered from Omlet with the eglu. Tbh I'm a bit worried about where I'm going to get the next lot from as I only have about half a sack left.

We get the Hemcore from Scats at Chineham but they don't sell organic chicken food. Someone on here said that Bstoke Pets at Home was selling Marriage's layers but I couldn't find any when I looked. I will ask next time I go there.

All the sundries I get from the internet on ebay or Flytes of Fancy but the P&P is too high to get pellets and corn this way because of the weight. Perhaps if we all ask at PAH they'll get some in?

They're just not used to us in this neck of the woods! I managed to get the Aubiose from Shapley Ranch at Murrell Green on the A30 (in between Hook and Hartley Wintney) for £7.60. I notice that there is a new pet supply place at Hatch (behind Conkers Garden Centre also on the A30 near Old Basing) - they have got chickens, so I might try there too - I'll let you know what I find when I get the courage to pop in.

Hi Both!

Like you I've been searching the area, PAH only does Dodson & Horrell and Scats their own brand.

I sometimes use the Saddlery in Old Basing for horse feed and their sister branch in Wokingham does a few bits of poultry feed. I'm going to ask if they will stock organic feed as they are usually quite helpful! Anything they stock in Wokingham they will happily deliver to Old Basing so may help you??

I work right near the wokingham one so popping in there this week and will let you know!! Of ocurse I would be happy to be a courier from Wokingham if they do anything suitable! :D

I'm not back in office till Wednesday so I'll go and ask wokingham then.. If I get chance today I'll pop to Old Basing and ask there but I know them quite well and they don't know chickens! The owner of the company is always at Wokingham so thats my best bet!!

Do you know any makes/brands?

Just been to the pet supply place behind conkers already mentioned.. bit shed like but prices good..

she had Duke & Butler layers pellets for 6.85

Didn't stock organic ..but.. asked me to call her with the brands wanted she will get it from her wholeseller.. says she is bit cheaper as no rent to pay as not a proper shop ( converted stable)

She is also going to be breeding and selling chickens and turkeys, plus housing. only down side was she really put the eglu/cube down as said they are hard to clean!!

So if you want to let me know organic brand.. as don't really know any  I'll find out pricing.. of course if you want her number yourselves just shout!! :D

Must admit I was surprised.. she had a "friend" who couldn't cean it so changed it for a wooden one!! Obviously never heard of a jet washer!!

Did put me off her a bit :( but local and good price so will give it a go..

Will still try Wokingham too though..

Wow, that was a quick trip! This is a website that you can order organic feed online and they have lists of stockists:

www.organicfeed.co.uk

It mentions Shapley Ranch as a supplier, but she doesn't stock poultry feed. Again the cost of ordering online is a bit extreme, but I guess that is because it is bulky.

BOCM Pauls do "Farmgate" poultry feeds (organic), but the nearest stockist is in Theale!

Trying to find out anything on the SCATs website is awful!

Will let you all know what we find.

Oh well if you see a red Honda Jazz doing that route quite often, it'll be me - I am doing the taxi trip to take my son to work in the Gamekeepers up the road (until August and then he will have a short break and go back to College and I will be free :D !)!

I wouldn't mind if it was a normal day job - but his shifts are 11.30 till around 2.30 and again from 6 until late! He has Friday free and Tuesday and Saturday mornings free. Basically I'm up and down there 4 times - 8 runs in a day! His bike is broken, so it's "Muuuuum??????????" And then he doesn't like the hill near the Dorchester Arms - oops, The Hogget (can't say I blame him there - it is a killer hill)!
