little chickadee
My son absolutely loves the Oxford Reading tree books and I've taught him to read using these. I know that there is a tv series which is available on dvd but I'm wary of getting this incase the book stories are used in the tv series and this spoils them for him so he won't want to read them. Does anyone know whether this is the case or not? I seem to remember there is lots of sentence level work done on the tv version, which he could really do with, as he's very reluctant to write anything. Many thanks in advance
Goosey Lucy
My son's school also uses The Biff and Chip books, I'm sure some of the programmes are based on the books used as texts in school. Have you looked on their website? If you look here it lists every story, can you compare it to the dvd titles?
Goosey Lucy
Here is a list of all the stories covered in the dvd. Here is the BBC website page with activities to do. Although he may see the stories on tv, my eldest loved them so much it didn't matter to him and he still enjoyed the books.
little chickadee
thanks Lucy - I've looked up the episode titles and the only books available seem to be tv tie in's not books from the actual Oxford Reading Scheme. My worry is that my son is very "interesting" (suspected autistic) and refuses to read stories out loud in which he already knows what happens, which can be quite awkward!!!! I think I should be safe with the dvd though by the look of the titles. He loves the characters so much from the books
Cate in NZ
I've not seen the DVDs or anything else, so I'm not much use here, but just reading this has sparked off a few memories. Both of my children learned to read with the Oxford Reading Tree books, Biff, Kipper & Chip, Wilma, Wilf & Aneena became a part of our lives for a while when we read about them daily. Back then I used to be a parent helper with reading too, so I'd spend entire mornings listening to little ones reading these stories to me. Both of my children enjoyed the tales, especially when they moved onto the magic key series. Oh, nostalgia
Ain't Nobody Here
Exactly the same for me, Kate .

chickencam
Hubby and I both helped out with reading every wednesday morning for 4 years in our children's primary school. We loved it, so rewarding, the teachers loved having a man helping and he was very good at making a game out of for the more reluctant readers. We did get a bit bored of the same stories after 4 years though, but also there were some which we didn't hear the end of Most children loved the Oxford Reading Tree books because some reading scheme books are so tedious. Shirl
I've taught DD1 to read using the Oxford Reading Tree using the Read at Home series as well as those used in schools. What level do the Magic Key series start? DD is reading at level 3/4 .
Shirl
I've just found the dvd on Asda.com for only £4.93 including delivery. Sounds like a bargain so I thought I'd give it a go.
