Hi

 

My chickens survived my hols and were very pleased to see us (for some reason I expected them to have forgotten us!). They've been here just over two weeks now and are now sitting down when I am going near them....is that what is called crouching? I just wondered if that means they are nearing the magical egg laying day?!

Crouching - they go down low and spread their wings a bit - if they are usually eggs within the week - one of mine has never crouched, but lays, the other sstarted producing 3-4 days after crouching.

Horray...Blackie laid her first egg this morning! 40g. Charlotte now crouching so hoping for 2 eggs tomorrow!

She was eyeing up to the cat on the patio and then put her head on one side, lowered her body and spread out one wing. Is that crouching or sunbathing

Sage my Pepperpot started crouching 5 days before laying so keep your fingers crossed for an egg this comming week!!!

Molly did that this morning . I thought she was ill but then remembered reading about sunbathing . She had one wing stretched right out and looked very odd!

mine crouched for about 3/4 days then eggs, congratulations!

I'm still waiting on my white star - she started crouching noticably about 4 days ago - hopefully we will both get eggs soon

OK can I add to this? We've had our new girls for a week and they are POL. Both crouch down when you get near them and hubby and I both commented on how easy the are to pick up. Both had little pink combs and one still has, the other is bigger and pinker. Is there any significance in their combs and laying?

Yes, their combs and wattles often get bigger and redder when they're ready to lay (although one of mine stayed fairly small for a while after she started - it's getting bigger now).

Sugars is large and red, Cocoas has got bigger and redder but is'nt as big. They are both laying well though, and have somehow synchronised their laying I think Sugar likes to sit on cocoas warm egg to lay!..

Snowman, congratulations on the first egg!

 

Our first laying pepperpot took a day off after her first egg and then did 3 in 3 days, a day off and has laid every day since..

 

Nutmeg, my second pepperpot and one of my rangers are starting to have very big and red combs, the pepperpot is crouching from today too..

so if we got them from the same batch...I guess we did, we are not far off...
