joegg
Neglected to take the advice on here after first getting the chooks and have just noticed they have lice. What is the best treatment? Should i also worm them and treat for red mite as a precaution? They are very happy and healthy looking just spotted a bit of dandruff. They are frequently dust bathing i suppose this is a clue too. chelsea
best thing I had for lice when Ella had them was Johnsons Mite Spray (in blue tin with budgie on the front) available from pet shops/pets at home etc. Approx £3 a tin. 2 person job when applying and do in a ventilated area - it killed all the lice we could see instantly and ella was lice free in 24 hours. As a precaution we repeated the spray after 3 days.
The Dogmother
I use Ivomec Eprinex, just a drop on the skin at the back of their neck 2-3 times a year keeps them lice and mite free. *Please note that it's not licenced for use on poultry in the UK, but lots of vets recommend it. beckib
Yoko and Hendrix both had lice at the weekend, I also used the Johnsons lice spray, go it from Pets at Home. Worked really quickly and they were lice free within 24 hours! But i am also considering the drops on the neck, prevention is better than cure. Besides i have also read that chickens can get fly strike, something that i really want to avoid. Good luck!
Chickybaby
I have also just had a infestation of lice on my chickens. Using the advice given on here I bought some of the Johnsons lice spray and when I checked last night I couldn't see any signs of lice so fingers crossed I've got rid of the little critters. I've also ordered some Ivomectin which I'm going to use as a preventative measure from now on. Must admit I was shocked to see the lice and felt so sorry for my chickens, it must have been so irritating for them. I've also doused their eglu and dust baths with the red mite powder, which I shall keep doing from now on.
joegg
Thanks have ordered some red mite powder, diatoms and will get some Johnsons spray today. Do you think i should worm them, just in case?
grasshopper30
My Vet, who keeps bantams, told me to spray Frontline for cats under their wing in the "armpit" just one squirt each side. This is not a licensed for use on poultry in the UK, but the Vet advised me that he had been doing so for many years without any problems. It worked ok. WitchHazel
Thanks Claret Is there any chance you could post a pic of the bottle please? I've been googling and am getting confused between Ivermectin, invermectin, Ivomectin eprinex.. Thanks for your help.
The Dogmother
There's info here Hazel http://www.pekinbantams.com/ivomec.asp What you are looking for is Ivomec Eprinex You will have to ask your vet to order it in as it's prescription only in the UK *not licenced for use on poultry in the UK* My vet recommended 2 doses a week apart if there's an infestation, then roughly twice yearly as a preventative measure. While it does have a worming action, this is not as specific as Flubenvet or Panacur.
WitchHazel
That's great Claret, thank you. Hazel
The Dogmother
You're most welcome. Bear in mind that the bottle is enormous, so it will take you ages to get through - I've 'donated' quite a bit.
LJ's Chooks
Hi Claret, Still not convinced if mine have got an infestation or not... we chatted a week or so ago on line. I've used DE... the one that i thought had them has no more signs, but they are all scratching and dust bathing (even in mud) so much more than usual. There are no signs in the cube of anything untoward... so off to the vet on Friday! I think i may have to use meal works as a bribe! Thanks for all the info on eprinex... you can buy Ivomec pour on for cattle on line ... but i think that is different to ivomec eprinex... am i right? A word of caution on Frontline... it does not work for all animals... we nearly lost our two cats down to frontline, I know they are very different to chooks, but just a word of caution, they both had a massive allergic reaction, so i hope our vet gives us eprinex rather than frontline. I'm going with lots of info printed, but the receptionist did say it would probably be eprinex with our vet!!! I'll let you know...

That's the one LJ - it's the cattle pour on variety that you need. Shame you're not near me or I'd give them the once over for you. All chooks seem to dustbathe more in the summer, I think it's just because there's more dust around
Swinnys Hinny
We got the Eprinex pour on for cattle from our vet but afterwards found you can buy it on line cheaper. Just Google it and there are several places that come up and say no prescription needed as well! Our vet said he had been on a recent seminar where it had been hailed the new wonder treatment for poultry keepers. He suggested one week egg withdrawal, but did say that this was just his opinion and as there was no milk withdrawal period when used on cattle it may not be necessary to have an egg withdrawal period either. The dosage we gave was 2 drops per chook however we read other people had given up to 5 drops. All lice gone within 2 days and so much easier than dusting 6 chooks SH
The Dogmother
That's more or less what my vet says about egg withdrawal - they use Ivomec on humans, so if I eat the eggs, presumably i will be lice and worm-free!
LJ's Chooks
Just back from the vets and yes they definitely have lice. The vet (chicken specialist) would not give me eprinex but a new one has just been licenced she said fro chooks....Xeno 200 spray by Genitrix. It is invermectin based, but a 2 week egg withdrawal. she has advised spraying now, then again in 2 weeks and then again in 4 weeks to break the cycle and then use as a preventative. I guess it's similar to eprinex, same chemical base, but designed for smaller animals and birds. It was easy to use as it is in a spray bottle, but a tad pricey. I hope it works, I'll let you know. No eggs for 2 months.... boo hoo!!!! Happier less scratch chooks.... hooray!
The Dogmother
It's the same thing LJ, just in a spray form rather than a liquid. Not sure on the price, so can't judge whether it's more economical or not. The active ingredient is tha same though - I checked it with my vet a while ago. Glad to hear that you've got it covered though.

AJuff
Well a cuddle with Hermione revealed lice!!! I didn't have the stomach to check the other but I work on the 'where there's one, there are many'. So off to the vets this morning to find Ivomec Eprinex . . . fruitless task. I started with the small and large farm vets in town which hadn't heard of it and were not prepared to prescribe such a dangerous chemical!!!! So I went to my local vets where I'm registered and they suggested I saw their chicken vet as they could not prescribe such a treatment without seeing at least one of the hen!!!!!! I'm astounded that I have to take a louse ridden hen into see the vet on Monday!!!!!! Even then she may not prescribe what I'd like her to. Anyone else had problems getting Ivomex Eprinex? joegg
Johnsons stuff seems to have worked i checked all three today and saw no sign of the little blighters. But sprayed to eliminate any nits. Back to school Monday so its time to check the kids over, but at least they can be combed.
