HI all, sorry I dont know whether any of you can give any advice or help, I have given a man who sells jewellery (does parties) a large orange stone to be set in silver so I can wear it (my mum and dad bought it for me but the setting broke) so it's dear to me, but this guy says now that the stone never arrived at his friends who was doing the work.. in India!..

 

It has been sent recorded or signed for however I do not know how reliable Indian postal system is. It's been a couple of months and still not arrived, is it likely to???

 

I am gutted, I love that stone. As you know orange is my colour and my parents bought it for me specially from an old jewellery stall when they visited Dorset. so it's not like its a new stone that I can easily replace.

 

The jewellery man has said he will find a replacement for me, however it's not the same. He also says he has filled out a lost/mislaid form with the royal mail.

 

Any advice?

Can you get the Royal Mail tracking number from him? There is a good online search which is a good start - you can see if anyone has signed for the goods. Otherwise it seems like your Jeweller has done the next step which is to fill out the misleaid items form.

yes I've asked for the tracking number. But I am unsure whether that will be much good if it's left the country.. I will try with that though.

I'm so sorry that you've lost your stone in the post, I really hope that it turns up for you.

 

However I sent a parcel to my husband overseas, containing a recharger, spare battery and software for our camera, and it never arrived at it's destination . 3 months later it still hasn't and I've given up imagining it ever will. I paid for registered delivery with Royal Mail and after it hadn't turned up I rang them. Their phone system is a nightmare, sorry, but it really is, option this, then option that interspersed by loads of chatter abiout their services.... very hard to navigate, not at all user friendly and when you finally get to the option you want you then wait a fortnight to actually speak to someone . OK I admit to a tiny exaggeration there . Anyway, the upshot is that the registered delivery only covers the UK part of the journey..... my parcel made it onto the plane, after that they neither know nor care .

 

I hope that you have better luck than me, and that yours turns up, but I have to say I feel pessimistic. A friend suggested to me that sending something registered mail highlights to people in the recieving country that the parcel contains something of value in a situation where there is no monitoring as to where the item has gone.... a great position for a light fingered mail worker . Certainly I know for a fact that unregistered parcels have reached hubby quicker thanregistered ones..... I'd like to believe that that's because of the extra checking involved with the registered ones, but I'm not convinced of that.

Thanks, I had the same thought to be honest about drawing attention to it. Also I did think it wouldn't be protected outside this country.. how could it unless royal mail were in that country too and their not.

 

It's silly it's only a stone, but I cried when I read his email that it still hadn't arrived and that he had taken these steps. Maybe to him a replacement would seem ok. To me it's heartbreaking.

 

I really hope it arrives.

However, there used to be something called International signed for, available from Royal Mail, to track and obtain signature on delivery abroad. It isn't available to every country, but can offer compensation of up to £500 I understand.

That's what I went for.....compensation was nothing like £500 when I looked at it unfortunately . They are supposed to get signature abroad but never bothered.... in NZ at least, hubby had his parcels stuffed in letterboxes with no signature and the Royal Mail worker I spoke to basically admitted that the service was useless because they could not enforce it overseas. Maybe some countries recognise it

I hope you took them for every penny then Kate. Getting money out of Royal Mail is unfortunately like getting blood out of a stone They don't even give you the cost of postage back if they lose the item

well I dont hold out hope that this is how he sent the item as he told me it is insured up to £34..

 

I know it's silly, I am just devastated though, it's just becasue my parents bought me it

Sorry to hear of your missing stone

 

We had a parcel go missing on its way to South Africa...tried all the usual routes of filling out forms etc to no avail. Months later it reappeared on our doorstep. So...don't give up hope, it may turn up one day!

 

Its always a worry sending valuable things in the post...pity your jeweller did not tell you he would be sending it to India! You might not have let him had you known!

I'm so sorry about your precious stone, Loopyloo . It's so hard when something sentimental and unreplaceable goes missing or gets lost . I hope you have some success tracing it. Don't give up hope!
