size of eglu

Recommended Posts

We have just ordered our first two chickens but we have decided to go with a cube as we may add more chickens in a couple of years, if all goes well! Is there an issue with the size of eglu related to the number of chickens? I know that the eglu accomodates up to 4, and the cube can house 10, but will 2 chickens find the cube too big? That maybe a really silly question but we are wondering if we should just downsize and go with the eglu. We also wanted to give our chickens a bit more space to run around in. Hope someone can help!

Hi ya,

If you've got plenty of room for a cube then I personally would go for a cube. It is really too big for just 2 chickens. If I had a cube I would go for about 6 or 7. We've got an eglu with 3 hens in comfortably and we are not sure that we have room for a cube, and we would like more hens. If only our garden was bigger!! Believe me you'll always want more, it's so addictive. :D

P.S Welcome to the forum!!

Ah yes, that's what my dad keeps asking....I have a few neighbours who buy them at the moment and I may even have to put a sign up in the end!! Hubby always goes back to Sweden with a backpack full of hardboiled eggs (last time he took raw ones they took them off him, because they contained liquids and weren't in 100ml bottles as per Govt directives!)

I don't have a cube but a "half-pint henhouse" from the Domestic Fowl Trust that is designed for 4 hens and is a bit like a cube. We looked a the next size up (designed for 6 hens) but when we asked the lady she recommended we stuck to the smaller size because she said that in the winter they might get cold in a larger house as they all snuggle up together and the larger version was pretty roomy for 6 let alone 4.

No idea whether there is any truth in this or whether it applies to the cube. However....what a great excuse to get more chickens in a couple of months time, eh?
