I have a Silver Nck who wont come out of the nestbox and makes a purring noise whilst sitting.

 

Is this broody behaviour?

I dont know.... my Sussexes go broody at the drop of a hat, but my Bluebells never have!

They can still go broody, but mostly have it bred out of them. Hens act differently when broody, but mostly they are glued to the nest, looking like a feathery pancake and may be grumpy if you disturb them. I had a broody Pepperpot, and I also have a pure-breed who couldn't care less about her eggs or where she drops them.

 

They don't all perform as they are suppose to.

Kentucky, one of my Pepperpots went broody last summer.

 

I placed frozen blue ice blocks in the nest box, replaced them three or four times a day and booted her off the nest and closed the door when everyone had laid.

 

She wasn't best pleased, but she did snap put of it in about 4 days.

Both my original omlet girls went broody last summer, one pepperpot and one gingernut, but as they had been laying like troupers and they were willing to share the nest box, i let them have a break

Gucci, my sussex hybrid went broody last year, my amber star never has.

My pied suffolk Dotty goes broody about once every 6 weeks. Bless her she's in solitary as we speak. So far none of my other girls have tried going broody. As others have said, each chook is different.
