which side is porthole on cube?

Recommended Posts

Hi all

I am thinking of upgrading to a Cube can someone tell me which side if your cube if you were facing it side on with cube to your left with run coming off to your right ? I know this seems a strange question but it is all related to being able to positioning it against my brick built shed and still being able to access porthole! and give the girls there own permanant space rather than currently moving them round my rapidly decimated lawn bless them in there pink eglu !

The photos on omlet show different options but I wonder if this is the image is reversed in photo? or am I just totally bonkers! hoping someone can make sense of this?

Hi Lynn,

Your post is a little bit confusing, but... I do know that if you are standing behind the cube, there is one hatch (w/ the word Omlet on it) to the left-hand side, another squared hatch to the right-hand side.

Now, I just saw a demo cube at a farm show on the weekend, and my own hasn't arrived yet, so I have forgotten which hatch is for collecting eggs and which is for removing the perches to clean... other more experienced folks will be by in a bit to clarify my well-meaning but obviously flawed answer. :?

ok if youre looking at it from the side with the cube on th eleft and the run on the right then the pophole is on the other side to where you are standing. I hope that makes sense.

there is a 'fake' one on the other side which may be why its conusing in pics.

Hi Stephanie

well I hadnt even spotted there were two portholes! so thanks for that maybe a cube owner can clarify which side is which but looking at it from behind makes more sense! duh why didn't I think of that? If push comes to shove I can always turn round to position it with the nest box side facing the garden. I am just a tad OCD about thing looking right and to have something run right to left just seems alien tro me bit like pictures not hung perfectly straight!

Perhaps I wont share this type of info with my GP!!

Hi Bronze

Thanks for the info looks like I will have to reconcile myself to cube running from right to left if I upgrade I know it will drive me nuts however I will just have to get used to it! Perhaps offering a choice is a suggestion Omelet might consider for other loonies like me!!

When you face the front of the Cube, the egg-port is on the right, and the handle to open the Cube door is on the left.

It makes no difference which way round you place the Cube, because you need to leave a roughly equal-sized gap each side to allow for these two activities.

It could be argued that the door-opening side takes up the most space, because there is a set distance that must be observed. On the other side, you can get by with less, provided that you are willing to open the egg-port the minimum necessary amount to get the eggs out. If you always opened the roof to get the eggs, you could avoid the use of the egg-port door altogether.

Ideally, however, I would say you need two clear feet in width each side of the Cube.

Thanks a million again I didnt consider needing to leave that amount of space nor did I realise that the handle and port were on oposite sides it has certainly given me something to think about
