Orthodontist visit

Recommended Posts

My son has an impacted eye tooth and today we were referred to our local hospital and can expect a three month wait for a consultation.

Anyone got any experience of what he can expect? I've researched a bit but it would be nice to hear from someone with first hand knowledge.

My daughter had problems with overcrowding and non emergence of her eyeteeth.

It is a few years ago now

First of all she had an xray to establish that they were present, then she had 4 perfectly healthy, un-decayed molars removed to create more space, and to allow for later emergence of wisdom teeth. It broke my dentist's heart....and mine.

Then she wore train track braces for 2 years, with regular visits to the Dental hospital.

Results superb.

I had to have this done, too, when I was about 14. The teeth either side of the extracted teeth moved together and closed up the gaps, and the result is two even rows of teeth. (I had so-o-o much dental work done in my early teens, to prevent overcrowding/overlapping but, although I hated it, and there was a lot of pain, the result is worth it.)

This sounds very similar to what is happening to my oldest boy, he has a congenital problem where some of his adult teeth are missing at the front top, they have removed 4 good teeth, 2 baby that didn't feel the need to come out (due to nothing behind them pressuring them I suppose) and two adult teeth.

He is under the orthodontist and will have fixed braces (train track type) on top and bottom.

But as you can imagine its hard for a 12 year old with only his two front teeth and a huge gap either side at the moment! :(

The idea is to let what teeth he does have in his gums 'move' into the space they have created and then they will adjust them all to match each other etc etc... it's a long process.

I had impacted wisdom teeth and had to have them removed by general anesthetic (sp?) in hospital after quite a few xrays.

I wish your son well.

:)

Sounds nasty, but with technology and dentistry as it is today I am sure it will be sorted out and he'll have lovely teeth in the end.

Currently I have 2 sets of fixed braces-one on the top and one on the bottom. This was after I had a removable brace to decrease my large overbite and straighten my teeth out enough before I could have fixed braces. This stopped me from being able to bite down properly as otherwise I would have knocked off the lower blocks.

My mouth is quite overcrowded too, but that's only as my teeth are in the wrong place and my clever dentist reckons all of my teeth will fit and I hopefully won't have to have any teeth out. I'm about 6 months into my treatment and so far it's going well.

Remember that dentistry has improved a great deal even since my brother had orthodontic work and that they can do a lot nowadays, so try not to worry about your son as these people definitely know their stuff!

I took my 6 year old son to the dentist last week and was told he'll need a brace to expand his upper palate (is that the right word?) as soon as he is old enough to 'cope' with a brace - so maybe aged 8 or so.

It's breaking my heart knowing that it will hurt him (mine used to ache terribly and I didn't have orthodontics until I was about 13) but it needs to be done before his adult teeth are down and locked in position.

My teeth looked gorgeous after orthodontics but I had the retainer wire removed in my 20's and my bottom teeth have slipped back out of line

Anyway, sorry to come off topic and just talk about my dental woes!

Jo
