Ain't Nobody Here

Eeek! I've got to give a lecture!

Recommended Posts

Well, not really, but it feels like it :? .

The lecturer at a college where I did a course for work a year or so ago phoned ages ago to ask if I'd come in and talk to a group of students about my experiences working with autistic kids (I'm a learning assistant in a special school). I couldn't do it at the time because of family circumstances, but she phoned last night and asked if I could do it ..... tonight  .

I agreed, mainly so I have hardly any time to panic!

I'm putting together some stuff but I'm really hoping they'll ask loads of questions & I don't have to stand up and talk at them for ages.

Only upside, I get "visiting lecturer" fees  .

Dont fret ANH, you will be fine. The more you worry the more tongue tied you would be (well that happens to me anyway!).

Relax and try not to think about things to much and im sure it will all come flowing out! :D

let us know how it goes.

Well, I've done it :D . Can't say it was a totally enjoyable experience :? . About 15 people, one of whom is a parent at my school (I've met her briefly before, she's really nice), another is a former parent (don't know why her child was moved :? ), some who were learning assistants in mainstream working with autistic kids and 2 other parents of autistic kids.

I really felt throughout that I wasn't telling them anything they didn't already know - we ended up just chatting generally which made it easier, but I felt like a bit of a fraud  .

I'm hoping the lecturer won't ask me again :? .

Well done ANH. They probably learnt far more from the way you did it, informally and interactively, and at the very least they will understand that many experiences are similar and someone else will be going through the same thing somewhere. They probably learnt a lot more than you realise! Good on you! 8)

Well done! don't worry - they probably took away a lot more than you think, it's very hard to read an audience.

I always think that if an audience goes away with just one new idea or thought, then it's been worthwhile. And sometimes, even if they know it already, hearing it again from someone with experience is helpful - it confirms that they've understood things, and reinforces the message.

Well done you!
