Newbie wants some advice

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I am sorry if people have asked this before but I just want some advice as I have a very large garden , and recently I saw some rescued hens and it started to make me think that I would like to offer a home to some ex batts as I have the room. But would love some general tips/advice on settling them in ..

Also someone said not to get them as they will be very noisy and will annoy my neighbours but each time I have watched my friends birds I have not heard a peep from them.

Are they noisey or not ?

Thanks

AJ

hello and welcome. :D

We live in a cul-de-sac in a small village. We have neighbours, and havent had any complaints in 2 years. Chickens can be noisy, my lot make noise after they've laid eggs as they like to announce to each other that they've done it! they also cluck to each other across the garden - but this isnt a continual noise. They have clucking "spells"

Bearing in mind your garden is large (mine is small) I dont think you would have a problem. I think it sounds noisier in the garden then it does "over the other side of the fence". Its no more bothersome than lawn mowers, cars etc.

Go for it I say.

My girls make hardly any noise - mind you they haven't started laying yet! I could be speaking too soon.

You might find that your neighbours like chickens. I hadn't told my neighbours that I was getting chickens but both sides love them. They even had them when they were younger. :D

I live in a terrace and have 5 ex-batts and can safely say they are not noisy....no noisier than other chickens anyway. They make the odd 'chicken noise' and have a lovely little chirp chirp sound when they get excited and things but they are quieter than owning a dog!

They are such fantastic creatures, am having such a wonderful time with them. Seeing them grow from day to day is just magical.

Go for it!!
