Really bloody back

Recommended Posts

Have just got back from a couple of hours food shopping and went to let the chookies into the back garden when I found Ginny pulling at the feathers on her back just before her tail. When I got closer she had pecked herself to bits. We caught her and had a good look and she has ripped the skin off down to the muscle. Have sprayed her with blue antiseptic spray and are waiting for the vet to ring us back. Am really worried that this is too big a hole to heal. She doesn't actually seem to be bothered by it and is wandering round the garden with the others quite happily. The others don't seem at all interested in her back even before I sprayed her. Wish the vet would hurry up and ring.

Just letting off steam

gosh, how terrible! Do you think she might have lice or mites that are irritating her? I've read somewhere that stockholm tar is good for wounds although where you'd get some at this time of night I don't know :?

Quick update.

Vet phoned back last night and didn't seem unduly concerned  Said we just need to keep it clean and keep spraying with the antibiotic spray.

Sprayed her again last night before bed and then spent half the night with one ear opening listening to the eglu

Opened up with trepidation this morning but they all fell out as usual and she seems relatively OK.

There seems to be a bit of an atmosphere (that must sound so daft but there really is something in the air :? ) so we are wondering if the other two started it off and she finished it. She has just started to lay so I am wondering if its the pecking order coming into play.

Have to say it was pretty horrific and we are a bit incredulous that she is just toddling about and hasn't seemed to be in pain at all.

Will keep spraying and hope things ease off a bit.

Thank you for your responses and fingers crossed.

xx

How horrible for you (and her).

Keep using the spray and maybe get hold of her and bathe the area with tea tree solution or salty water.

If the other show any interest in her wound, they she must be separated asap.

Hope she heals quickly.

quick up date.

Still spraying Ginny and would you believe she's wandering around with the other two quite happily and apart from being green on her back you wouldn't know anything had happened. She's still laying as well - we're not allowed to have the eggs though because of the spray. Wish I was as resilient.

Thanks for all your replies - I probably totally over reacted but I have to say she looked in a bad way and she is part of the family after all.

Husband calls me "The mad chicken woman" now (but he's been checking on her as much as I have so enough said I think  )

Take care everyone.

Love
