OK you're going to have to give me a bit more info first though

 

how big is the space? is it a clear space (though shady) or are you growing lots of other things in there too? and what did you want - tree? shrub? little plants? anything else it needs to do too (eg deter flies )?

 

Mmm, thinking perhaps things that can grow in containers?? Sun or shade won't be a problem as I can just put the containers wherever they need to go. Shrubs and plants would be nice although a container grown tree would be ideal too

 

It wouldn't need to do anything else really just look nice and deter flies.

Dig a hole in garden,empty and backfill.

 

Ah, just started a thread to describe my experiences with this method -- basically, the fox has been at the hole looking for whatever died there, and this despite covering the backfill with ash and bark chip -- and despite my Foxwatch. That must be some powerful smell to a fox... gross as it may be, the next one is going to be flushed down the toilet; but will wear a face mask as someone above suggested!

 

Well fox still doesn't seem to have realised that I have chooks - not sure how this hasn't happened and don't worry I'm not getting too complacent (although maybe a bit ). We used to have them in our garden regularly sunbathing so a bit surprised not to have seen one yet again.

Don't really want to encourage them in if I can help it yet

 

Definately need to buy a face mask - in fact think I have one somewhere.

OK now I now this is really YUCK but after reading how bad the fly traps smell when you open them, I have been tempted to empty mine to find out for myself.

It's not that I don't believe you all, it's like the wet paint signs, and being tempted to touch it to see if it really is

Its a bit like the Derran Brown program recently - put a girl in a room with a kitten in a tank and a button telling her not to push it, the kitten would be electrocuted if she pressed the button......

He carried on conditioning her, left the room for the last 5 mins or so, sure enough she pressed the button at the last second!

He knew she would - had the number of the time she would press the button on the tank!

 

Anyway, back to the thread,

There is no way I'm trying one of those, I could heave just thinking about the smell

Reference the smell of the flitrap, I have mine hanging in a lilac tree away from the cube as I thought it would attract the flies away from the girls.

 

I honestly cant smell anything most of the time but one morning when I went to let the girls out and it was a beautiful morning and I was glad to be alive I took a deep happy breath and retched where I caught the smell of the trap.

 

I keep my deep breathing to myself until Im past the lilac now!

Can I just second what Chicken Lady says about Eucalyptus trees - they grow to a huge height and are very unstable.

 

I'd only been in this house for a few weeks when my neighbour knocked on the door and said 'did you realise your tree is down ....' We'd had high winds, and sure enough the eucalyptus had fallen, taken out two of my fence panels, was lying right across his lawn and had taken out one of his fence panels on the other side as well. Thank goodness it was winter and not a time when their little boy was playing outside!

 

Having just moved house, I hadn't budgeted for a bill of several hundred pounds to have it removed and the fence fixed! I didn't replant it - but if you do plant one, then coppice it regularly.

I noticed a load of flies around a "curry" poo so I tried an experiment - Diatom. It seemed to work, there were no more flies where there were before.

 

I'm trying to find a way of dealing with flies when we convert to a permanent bark chip run, a sprinkle of diatom might just do the trick!

sorry if daft question, but did you put diatom in the food or on the pooh!

I bought a Gotcha fly trap from ebay which uses recycled milk bottles. You screw the bottle to the top and fill it with water and fly attractant.

 

The advantage of this product over a FliTrap is that you don't have to empty it, you can just unscrew it and put the milk bottle lid back on it then bin it. Flies, smell and all just gone. I did read some horrible descriptions about emptying the FliTrap which is why I bought this product. It's also chemical free!!!

I have lots of refill sachets for my fly traps and can't afford to waste them, so will be biting the bullet and reusing mine.

I reckon if I can clean up duck pooh I can empty a fli trap

 

Where did you buy refill sachets from?
