4m x 3m Omlet pen, cube, new auto door still boxed and coop light

My chooks arrived a couple of weeks ago and I'm astonished at the amount of poo they generate! I'm not sure what to do with it all, I know it's good for compost but I don't have a compost bin as I have a tiny garden and not enough bare soil to accomodate one.

 

At first I buried it in small gaps in my titchy border but, again, there's not much room and I got concerned about too much of it burning the veggies.

 

I don't know anyone in the immediate vicinity with a compost bin, my father in law has one but he's an hour's drive away. I've offered it locally on Freecycle and had no response I don't want to chuck it in the bin if I can help it as we have fortnightly collections and life could get stinky!

 

Any ideas gratefully received .....

Are there any allotments near you? Could be worth popping down there if there are. I know we've nearly filled one compost bin already so not sure what to do next as I don't know of any allotments around here

I know a lot of people on here post "free chicken poo" on their local freecycle group. I think sometimes they get nice swaps for it from people who grow their own veg.

Yes! - started with one, quickly added another, moved to a farm, bought some wooden housing....... and gradually changed it all for second-hand Eglus

Sorry to get off the point, but Lesley do they all go home to their 'correct' eglu, or is it a free-for-all? Have they got a favourite colour?

 

I recently got an orange elgu (in addition to the Purple Palace) and now this is the only one that ever sees any egg-laying action. They love sitting in the orange glow!

We have two Eglus to a large run, and five small flocks of hens, each with a cockerel. They do seem to have a favourite out of their allotted two Eglus - they will lay in one..... and sleep in the other

 

.....back to Chicken Poo we had a bonfire last night to get rid of some very rotten bits of wood. My grandchildren were here and we toasted some marshmallows over the fire............until Lauren suddenly realised that she was toasting hers over a feed bag full of chicken poo!!!

 

Carl had used a few old feed sacks at the base of the fire and had accidentally put a feed sack of poo on there instead of the big compost heap just a bit further away
