helenc
Hi I am new, we have ordered a purple eglu and today went to Merrydale Poultry to see their chickens. We would like one each of the Sweetie, and the Ranger, the Blue and either the Copper Black or Schwartz. I was hoping that someone would be able to tell me more about each of them ie temprement, what their eggs are like and which would you recommend- other suggestions are more than welcome. Thank you in advance Helen
Snowy
Hi and welcome Helen! You can't go wrong with hens from Merrydale, they are lovely The copper black is very similar to the Omlet Miss Pepperpot and the Ranger is the same as the Gingernut from Omlet. Both lovely birds, if anything the rangers tend to be a bit more friendly, docile and inquisitive. The Sweeties and the Blues are also very similar in temperament, good garden hens. They all lay brown eggs - but each individual hen will usually lay different variations of brown and even egg shapes, so you may still be able to tell them apart! Just choose the ones you like the look of on the day
Ain't Nobody Here
Welcome to the forum, Helen . Can't add to what Snowy's said, but just wanted to say hello I agonised over breeds at the start, but just picked out 3 pretty looking girls when it came to it
Egluntyne
You might find that the hens pick you and not the other way round.
helenc
You might find that the hens pick you and not the other way round. I didn't think of that!! Thank you everybody for your help and your welcomes, we had originally ordered the eglu with 2 pepperpots and 1 gingernut ranger but my daughter really wanted a white one so we went to Merrydale to have a look and work out the logistics of getting one from there on the same day as the others came, but we are on holiday in July and Karen from Merrydale is going on holiday the day after we get back and the eglu was being delivered the day after that so it wouldn't work out. We ended up cancelling the Omlet hens and will get them all from Merrydale either on the day we get back from holiday or when Karen gets back - I am keeping my fingers crossed its when we get back!! Snowy
Sounds like a good plan - hope you are able to get them after your holiday! Love your website by the way! (and local too! )
helenc
Yes we hope we will get them when we come back - I would love to get them before so we can definatley get what we want but its wouldn't be fair to do that to them. Glad you like the website- it keeps me out of mischief - although its a bit more than that at Christmas when all the decorations come!! quickcluck
Hi Helen.. Ive done the exact same thing!! Cancelled my Omlet hens as we really wanted a white one... maybe they should add them to their flock! My cube is coming on the 10th, then we are away for a week, so we are getting them on our return journey.. will have to be timed with military precision! Good luck!
