jlo
I have had the chooks for just over a month now. They have both started to lay - although I did get a shell-less egg from BB last night. It was quite alarming to watch her just before she lay it - I have been trying to describe a constipated chicken, much to the amusement of my friends! My query is really about the pellets that I got with the Omlet start up pack. They don't seem to eat very many at all of them. I baked some shells and scrunched them up into the pellets but the feed does not seem to go down very much. I only give them treats in the afternoon but they act as though they are starving when I arrive with the extras. Does anyone else find that their girls aren't mad keen on the "good" stuff? Are chooks just like us and not keen on the healthy stuff? Is there anything I can do to make the pellets more palatable or should I try something else? Any advice would be appreciated
munchkin
Hi I have the exact same problem with my chooks. Over the last 2 days I have put the pellets mix into a bowl and added warm water (from kettle and cooled) to make a porridge consistency, i then add a little probiotic natural yogurt - they love it The pellets mix I give them is the omlet pellets along with bokashi bran, diatom and a sprinkle of garlic powder. I have tried to put the porridge into the grub container but they seem to prefer just a regular cat bowl!
Stevie
I must say that mine dont go overboard about the Omlet pellets, but i did buy a small bag of mash a while back and they went mad for it.Might be the particular brand, but from what i gather-they do prefer mash anyway. I'll be getting Dodson & Horrell pellets next time anyway as they're much cheaper at £6.75 for 20kgs.
jills
Mine won't touch the pellets unless I make them into a mash. I think it's true that they are like us and don't really go for what's good for them. But if they seem healthy and are laying I shouldn't worry. Laura & CTB
They wont starve themselves, however, my two were never keen on pellets so I swapped to mash instead. It's messier but they love it.
Ain't Nobody Here
Mine seem quite happy to munch away on pellets . They have their heads stuck in the grub for ages when they get up and often come back into the run for a snack even when they're freeranging. Chuck Morris
Mine too will only eat the pellets if I make it into a porridge with a handful of Bokashi Bran added. They do poke their heads into the Grub , which contains the pellets but don't seem to eat them. On a plus side, if I want to get the girls back into the run, I just have to show them the bowl of porridge and they come rushing back. ChrisP
Mine love the pellets!
Bootscooter Nell
I have tried to put the porridge into the grub container but they seem to prefer just a regular cat bowl! Mine never really liked the grub. They much prefer the large dog bowls that I bought for them. Since then they are much happier eating the pellets but I also mix mash in with them too as I think one of mine actually prefers mash to pellets. That way they are all happy.
