moomin
Steve I love your signature!! I hope your MIL doesn't log on! I shouldn't imagine chickens would do anything to a tortoise - they normally 'square up' to things that move fast and would be a threat to them. But I expect someone will be along soon with more experience Enjoy your new chickens when you get them you will love them
Egg Lou
Hi My chickens and my four year old tortoise share the garden, however I do keep Jet in her her pen when the girls our free ranging as I worry about them pecking her eyes etc.. she is still young and only 5" long so being a bit careful! She does potter around the outside of the cube run without any problems though and the chooks don't take any notice at all!
Smiler
Dog, tortoise and chickens all are fine in our garden. Amy has her own pen and the others visit occasionally but she loves chasing them off. Chickens do take a wide birth of her most of the time and do that head on one side looking business when she moves. First time was very funny, you heard a chook screach and little legs running off down the garden back to the hen house.
welsh sarah
yes mine do i was worried the chickens might peck him, but they dont bother him at all sarah
Egluntyne
Won't the tortoise just retreat into its shell if the hens bother it?
cathybc
I can't stop giggling ! Timmy the Tortoise came out for a wander last night and made it into the conservatory where the chooks were waiting impatiently for their treats - and yes, they did that head to one side look before running off back into the safety of the garden..... Just as Smiler said. But not sure why they are scared of my little tortoise when they will happily chase cats away ????!!!!
malcolmS
Where can one obtain/buy a Tortoise these days? Does anyone know? I used to have one as a kid but now that these are rare and probably protected I would consider getting one if I knew where to go... regards Malcolm
NClaire
Lots of garden centres. pet shops, bird farms, and reptile shops have them, but they are very expensive - £100++ - because they have to be bred in UK now, importing them is illegal. cathybc
I got mine from a local pet shop. I am not keen on pet shops but just fell in love with him and bought him after being dumped ! He was expensive - about £200 . He is a mediterranean tortoise, so he has a totoise table with heat lamps etc, ie he can't be left in the garden like they were when we were kids. He came with CITES (I think ) paperwork, I think this is to say he has been captive bred rather than snatched from his mummy in Greece (something like that anyway). I have seen them in a couple of pet shops, local independent ones, also the Wyevale near me sometimes has them. You can also buy them on the internet but personally I wouldn't do that, I would want to see they were being kept ok and collect it myself. As with lots of things, there is lots of conflicting info about totroise care (eg to hibernate or not? heat mats or not?). So I did read up on tortoises before I got him. Try http://www.tortoisetrust.org/ for info. I also have a good exotic vet
