Chicken rustling - BBC Radio 2

Recommended Posts

Anyone else hear this? A lady from the Domestic Fowl Trust was on talking about the recent surge in chicken rustling. She specifically said Wyandottes, Orpingtons and Marans are being targetted and one chap had thousands of pounds worth of birds (and chicks :( ) stolen  .

Chris asked if she thought the recent popularity of keeping chickens was a good thing and she said yes, but hoped it wasn't a fad, like keeping a particular breed of dog, and that hens wouldn't be abandoned once people got fed up looking after them.

There was an article in today's Independent about that too.

She has got a point though - it is very fashionable right now, and that's always worrying when living things are involved (think about the number of labradors or other breeds in rescue). (Obviously not the chicken lovers that frequent this forum of course!)

(I've wanted chickens for about 20 years, but I've only just got them - so I'm just hoping that people don't think I'm jumping on the bandwagon!)

My MIL has got two chickens that we set her up with a couple of years ago as she was so taken with ours. She must have heard this today, as when James rang her at tea time she was telling us about it and that she was worried her chickens might get stolen.

I dont think she had heard the bit about them stealing 'fancy' fowl not our £6.00 cross breed type already 3 years old and looking a bit worse for wear.

I said I thought she would be ok and not to worry! :D
