StephanieSB
My new chicken, Phuzz, who is the only one laying, who has laid almost each day since she arrived, usually before noon... is having a bit of an odd time today. She has been in the egg box 3 times that I know of, for 20-30 mins per visit. She has left behind her quite a deep body print of where she'd tucked herself down into the Easibed. But no egg. I'm probably worried over nothing, but... that's one thing I do best -- so anyway, here's what she's been up to: 1st day home: egg c. 5:30pm 2nd day: no egg 3rd day: egg, c. 10:15 am 4th day: egg, c. noon 5th day: today -- as described above Am I worrying / wondering over nothing? Could it just be a reaction to the heavy rain? Do chickens not lay in the rain! -- oh, I just dunno. Edited July 2, 2008 by Guest
chucknette
Hi Stephanie Nothing to worry about at least shes laying. I think you will find that she will find the time of the day that she likes laying best. Early days yet. Mine are always in and out of the nest box quite a few times before they lay. I reckon its incase they miss something Best Wishes

I reckon its incase they miss something Oh, thank you very much for that. I can stop worrying now. Though I must say, a lot of this figuring out what is normal is ironically entertaining -- I cannot stop "thinking-chicken" -- this is better than tv. Egluntyne
It's what they do...especially when they are new to laying. Nothing to worry about.
MedusA
Don't worry about the "thinking chicken" either. It's all quite natural, especially as your girls are new. I have periods when I'm obsessed with my girls, then I have a spell when I'm more relaxed about it before going back into "obsessed" mode. Yes, well, I am certainly in the obsessed phase now But -- tada! -- one egg, in my greedy little hands and still warm. I knew she was just waiting for the sunshine to break the clouds... and Wimbledon will be back in action as well. Phuzz is just a Ancic fan, is all
The Dogmother
Don't worry Stephanie - some of mine are 3 years old and still hop in and out like a game of 'Indecision' when they want to lay.
Katy
I was just about to ask a very similar question as the OH is worried about how long Blackie takes in the nesting box. I guess she is normally in there for about 1/2 hour - does that sound about the right amount of time to lay?
chelsea
I think all hens vary to be honest. My maran is a get in and get out kind of layer - no messing - job done in minutes. Ella lays whenever and wherever she likes - even if its on the lawn. the 2 cochins - in the nestbox sometimes up to 2 hours before an egg is produced. law unto themselves
Katy
Thanks for that, I didn't really think it was a problem but promised I'd ask - considering he didn't really want them in the first place OH (or should I say 'The Hand That Treats') does like to fuss!
