Rolo Rabbit
Shirley has been mildly broody for several weeks as I know a lot of other people's have. She has now moved it up to another level and, I'm sorry to say it, but I could throttle her!!! (Don't worry - I won't). The last 3 or 4 days she's wanted to sit on the nest all the time so we've shoved her off and shut the door. 2 days ago she was dreadful and kept stomping round the garden, bokking her head off at nothing at all and jumping on top of the coop to try to get in. So yesterday I tried the icepack trick and I really thought she was cured as she was very calm all day. Today she's as bad as ever and is SOOOOOO noisy. We've tried dunking her in water, shutting the nesting box door, ice packs but she's so cross all the time. I 've read the FAQ bit on broodiness so I don't expect any more ideas but I just had to get it off my chest. Shall I just let her get on with it? (She's bokking again now.) chickenanne
It sounds really mean, but a good way to cure is i s to keep her on a wire mesh surface, so she has nowhere to nest, for about a week. The problem with leaving her to it is she'll get very skinny if she keeps it up for long, is not a very healthy way to be, if it goes on for a while. Rolo Rabbit
Shirley's back to normal!!!!!! I didn't have a broody cage so I persevered with the ice pack and within a couple of days she'd stopped puffing herself up, then she happily got off the nest when we asked and yesterday she layed again. Today we had a beautiful 60g brown egg. Welcome back, Shirl!
