Omlet Netting and my cats

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I took delivery of my Netting yesterday and started to play with it. Straight away I became nervous about how safe it would be for my cats. Within about 5 mins they were trying to climb through it and getting their heads stuck. I am worried that they end up hanging themselves in it. I have no problems with them getting inside with the girls as they "get on well".

I might end up turning the netting upside down so the larger holes are at the bottom so the cats can get through it... anyone see an issue with this?

Cheers

Sadgit..

I took delivery of my netting today and I too had the same thoughts about my cat. She can be a bit skittish and I'm worried that if something spooks her she'll charge into it and get caught up. Or if the nasty black and white cat picks on her in the garden which he regularly does they might both get caught up in it when they are having one of their regular brawls. I was going to leave it out permanently but now I'm thinking twice about it.

My netting is in a permanent position all across the bottom of my garden & my cats have no problems with it, if they want to get past it they jump on the fence, walk along it & jump down into the netted area.

None of them has ever tried to run into it, or got stuck in it.

It did happen last year, when I had a very small and very old Cornish Rex cat (sadly now gone to the great duvet in the sky). She was spooked by the chickens, and she managed to jump right through the netting, with some struggling.

Unfortunately I had it in a circle and she found herself on the inside  ... she shot across the middle and tried to exit the same way, but got stuck. It took me ages to free her (too mean to get a penknife and cut the netting! ) but she was fine, and amazingly the netting was undamaged.

My other normal-sized cat has never got stuck in it, I think poor old Thing was just a bit dozey and panicked, otherwise she'd have avoided it.

I'm in the same situation as Jules. My netting is permanently at the bottom of the garden and my boys have never attempted to go through it. They jump on on the wall and then into the chicken's area if they want to check things out.

The only scary thing which happened one day is that I dropped my bowl of corn before I got to the netting ( ) to throw it over for the girls and they went bonkers. They just kept running at it and trying to force their way through. It was really distressing to watch.....but they didn't get hurt and were fine once I'd scooped some up and thrown it over to them!

well thanks for the replies on this.. I turned the netting upside down so the cats could wander through it... after 30 mins I realised this was a stupid idea.. as the girls could just walk straight through as well :D :D :D

My cats both tried to walk through the netting initially. They seemed to think that if their heads went through, the rest would follow. Isabelle, who is huge, was very embarrassed by this misha, and refused to be shown how to do it.

Washburn found a slighlt raised up bit one day, and squeezed underneath. Izzy learnt by his example, and now they have worked out how to get underneath the netting. They do jump over it ocassionally, but they seem to prefer Commando* style.

Once I've shut the Girls in for the night, I also move one end of the fencing so the cats can get through without having to prostrate themselves, just in case there is an emergency.

*No, I don't mean the no-knickers sort.
