Urgent Help please

Recommended Posts

Just gone to put the girls to bed to find 2 of my 3 girls Sky and Nera dead. Nera has seemed a bit lethargic for a couple of days and did have diarrhoea but otherwise was ok. I wasnt worried enough to take her to the vet and had thought it might just have been the heat. The shock is finding Sky dead too. She was very healthy and happy and had laid as usual today. It looks like they have both brought up blood. We have cleaned out the eglu and put our one remaining chicken, Goldie, to bed alone. She looks well but then so did Sky. I am really worried know that we will find her dead in the morning. It must be some form of disease for 2 to go at the same time but has anyone any ideas?

What a shock for you. I am sorry.

This is just a guess because I don't really know much, but it sounds as if there could have been internal haemorrhaging. I am wondering if they could have eaten rodent poison or even slug pellets or something?

You definitely need to find out what happened. I am so sorry. :(:(

how awful - sorry I don't have any ideas, but I agree with the others, vet first thing tomorrow - what a dreadful shock for you.

I wonder if Ginette is right, that it's something they ate? especially if Sky didn't appear unwell.

So sorry.

:( So sorry to hear this, my heart goes out to you.

I don't recall anything like this reported on the forum before, so we'd all just be guessing.

Speaking to the vet in the morning seems the only option really, partly to establish what caused the deaths, and also to safeguard lone hen if possible.

What a shocking thing to find, let us know how you get along.

R.I.P. dear hens.

Goldie seems fine! I woke at 5.30 this morning to feed my baby and looked out of the window dreading what I might see but there she was tootling round the run. Hubby is cleaning out the house and changing all the hemcore. She's enjoying the freedom of the whole garden not just their area although she's after my lettuces!!

Spoken to the vet and he has no idea what the cause is. Says its not worth the cost of a post mortem. Just wait and see and if Goldie shows any signs of ill health bring her in for some antibiotics. Difficult as its much easier to deal with if you have a reason. Also, we need to wait before buying new hens in case Goldie's carrying something. Dont want to leave her alone for too long and it will help my children to get some new ones quickly so it will be hard to wait.

Thank you for all your thoughts.

phew, I should think you had a sleepless night - glad to hear that Goldie is in good health. It is very sad, but perhaps it's just an unfortunate coincidence that Skye and Nera died at the same time.

Hope you can soon get some new friends for Goldie.
