Growing Celery - when is it ready?

Recommended Posts

Can't really help much, because ours never really did well, but according to John Seymour (self-sufficient guru), wait till after the first frost and in some areas it can go on after Christmas.

Ours all got slug munched and were very scrawny - even at the allotment too, so it must be something I did wrong somewhere! Good luck with your harvest.

Same here, you need fairly heavy moisture retentive fertile soil to grow good celery it is a greedy and thirsty crop. We have the same problem with celeriac, I have tried for many years to grow it I have tended seedling carefully then planted them out and watered like mad, I have removed the lower leaves as suggested and have never grown anything bigger than a hairy tennis ball which by the time you have removed the roots and soil is more golf ball sized. I didn't bother this year :(

Good luck with yours poachedegg.
