Crooked feet on new legbar - help

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I have just brought a couple of new birds home (not from omlet though - sorry !) One is Ranger and the other crested legbar. the legbar has a crooked toe on each foot, at a right angle. the nail is therefore on its side. it doesn't seem to bother her, but I'm curious, is this normal, common ?

I can try and post photos if this would help ? (tomorrow night though)

Any help advice appreciated - got 4 chooks, peppa and george arrived last sunday (black and white sussex's respectively) named by my 4 yr old after peppa pig!!

Lucy legbar and Rhoda Ranger joined us today. All seem to have settled in really well, especially when free ranging in the garden.

I'm also suprised the two sussex put themselves to bed around 9pm - very helpful ! Hoping they will train the two new ones to do the same !!

Sometimes they do have bent toes, and as long as they aren't bothered, it shouldn't be a problem. They wouldn't win a poultry competition with them though.

A photo would be useful.

Where did you get the from? Just asking because you are fairly local to me. :D

Welcome to the forum.

From Moorlands Poultry, Leek. (all 4 are from there) i had to take one back - because when I got her home, her back was bear of feathers on about 2 inch square. the other chooks kept chasing her and pecking quite hard - I realise that is normal to sort out the 'order' , but this was excessive. so I only had the other for a couple of hours, and took her back - well, my OH did anyway. the first legbar had one crooked toe and this one has two - so wondered if it was a trait in the legbar?

I will post a photo tomorrow. If she will stay still long enough !!

Thanks for the quick reply Egluntine, this is my first post (well 2nd now !) and there is soooo much info on here its fab !

Hello :D

I had my Moorland Legbars from the same place :D and one of my girls has the inside toe on both feet quite bent inwards :( it doesn't make any difference to her but I was concerned at first, she may need the claw clipping if she isn't able to shorten it when scratching.

It makes her a little wary when walking across the cube roosting bars, but apart from that she is fine and very cheeky  she also had quite a bare patch near to her tail :( but the lovely new feathers are now coming through :D

Good luck with your new girls,

Correct me if I'm wrong. I'd heard from a breeder that a sideways sort of toe thing was caused by the eggs getting too hot in the incubator. It's weird as they can still move them but not in the right direction! They'll be fine and have had this since birth so don't know any different.

I did however get my first egg from her - photo shown also. 63g, which I think is quite good for first egg. nice pale green colour. She only joined us yesterday - and the other 3 are still layers in waiting !

Hope this works ! Thanks for all your replies so far.
