A couple of questions

Recommended Posts

I am on the verge of ordering my first ever chicken coop - just to decide on the eglu or cube!

I have checked with my local council and they have said I am fine to keep chickens but I have read that you should check your house deeds first. Now I have no idea where they are. I don't think the Building Society have them so would it be my solicitors or should I have a copy. The last thing I want is to get them and then find out I shouldn't have any!

So then the question is the eglu or the cube - really I only have space to have a maximum of 3/4 chickens (permanent run is 8ft square). If I get the eglu I will place it on a raised table to make it easier for cleaning etc. So really an eglu is sufficient but so many people talk about the wonders of the cube that I'm confused!

Any advice on either of the issues would be greatly appreciated.

Many Thanks

Debbie

Hiya

If you are that undecided it might be worth looking in the 'vist an eglu' section to see if there are people with eglus and cubes for you to vist locally. Sometimes seeing things in the flesh, so to speak, helps you make the decision.

For me I prefer the look of the eglu and also I have read quite a few people with niggles with the cube which has put me off slightly but that is my personal opinion.

If you have a fairly new build property there might be a clause about not keeping poultry, unlikely in an older property. If you have a mortgage then your building society will have the deeds. If you own the property you should have them somewhere. You can sleep 4 chickens in an Eglu with a big run, however, most people end up wanting more, so they get a Cube to provide future accommodation for a bigger flock.

An Eglu is meant for a maximum of 4 birds, but i keep 2 in it. If you're letting them range free then an eglu should be big enough i think. The eglu sleeping area looks small but chickens love to snuggle up tightly! The run isn't huge for 4 chickens though. If you'll be keeping them in there all the time then a cube would probably be better (it is more expensive obviously)!

Good luck, i'm sure they'll be plenty more people on here soon, helping you decide!

The eglu is perfect for a beginner, not too big, perfectly propotioned for small gardens and for ease of cleaning and ideal for 2/3 hens.

if you decide to go ahead with chicken keeping you could start off with an eglu and then later on decide to move up to a cube if you wanted to expand. Eglu's hold their value very well and almost resell for what you paid for them in the beginning.

I have both eglu and cube and I prefer my eglu - it simply is perfect, the cube is too big for my liking, yes you can fit in more hens but its not as easy to manouvre and doesnt have the trendy look that the eglu has. :D

Ireally I only have space to have a maximum of 3/4 chickens (permanent run is 8ft square).

Does this mean you have already constructed (or planned to construct) your own 8x8 run? An eglu would fit in nicely. I am very pleased with my eglu which has 4 hens in it. Obviously if you want more than 4 hens you are looking at a cube. But my eglu is great. Small enough so went the neighbours look over into my garden, it is only the size of a rabbit hutch.

But then I can't advise you on a cube as I don't have one. But the eglu is still a great product.
