SATS

Recommended Posts

Another rant coming up I am afraid. I have just had a look at some of the comments on the BBC news web site about the debacle of SATS this year but this forum is a much friendlier place to sound off!

My daughter is due to move to secondary school in September. She has consistently been towards the top of her class. I have seen her work and, I know I could be accused of bias, it is not bad at all.

She has just received her SATS results (late of course!) and although maths and science are pretty much as expected, she has been marked as lower than average for English.

She has been in tears as a result. It seems that this is not an unusual situation as some people have reported that children who have passed 11+ exams have received the same or worse marks than children who have been statemented as having educational needs.

Don't get me wrong - I think that the year upon year self congratulation about how results are improving has been mis-placed but it does seem as though something has gone quite wrong here.

Why am I not surprised

And what's worse is that SATS are about how well the schools are doing, not how well the children are doing  How can it be fair to be breaking children's hearts when it will give her no benefit at all to pass or fail a SATS test?

I hate testing children in any form, but the SATS are just the pits.

you can at least hope that all of the results for that subject are low. The other thing is that most schools use either CATS or MIDYIS tests to measure potential and have a host of other data on students including teacher assessed levels and fischer family trust data. Schools are (with a few exceptions) very data savvy and have to be because of how progress is measured.

This means that one dodgy SATS score is unlikely to send the world crashing down around her ears in September. She'll be fine and should be enjoying the last week of year 6. :)

for exactly the reasons mentioned, when I bring in our new year 7 intake - we have them in in early July to do CAT tests - we get these marked in 10 days and use the results to predict our teaching grops (knowing that the SATs will arrive sometime before Halloween) - then we tweak if the SATs throw up any anomolies.

Have had a chat with the teacher today and the school will be sending the whole lot back.

I have tried to reassure DD that it is not so important and that the secondary school will assess her ability separately I am not a particularly pushy parent and think that she was just upset as her teacher had given her a grade throughout the year that she was expecting to be confirmed by the results. She will have enough testing over the next few years and I really don't want her to get too harrassed by it all so it was a little worrying to see how concerned she was about it.

Interesting to hear Chicken Licken mention Fischer Family Trusts. I attended my first School Governor meeting last week and felt like I needed a continual dictionary to keep up with the discussion and all the acronyms. It was the first time that I had heard the term - reassuring to see that Forum users use it too!

She is certainly enjoying the last few days of school and has just been in the performance so is chock full of adrenalin!

Their last days at primary school are very emotional.

The fact that the school are sending them back and so so many schools are also doing the same shows that your daughte has nothing to worry about.

SAT's have no bearing on the children only on the school.

My son passed his 11+ and was in the top 1% in one area of his CAT score and the top 5% in the rest. He is just finishing yr7 at one of the best state schools in the country but his SAT's results last year were pretty average.

The above are all statistics we have always known that our son is intelligent and he will make of himself what he will with or without testing as will your daughter. Please don't worry and tell your daughter not to either life is what you make it , some of the most successful people fall outside most statistics.
