lizinsa
I'm moving out of my student digs and have 2 pieces of furniture that I no longer need. Does anyone know any alternatives to freecycle? I've looked at charities in the area but they're more after sofas and beds. I really don't want them to end up at the tip!
little chickadee
Try Barnardos or Betel of Britain.
lizinsa
Thanks for those, unfortunately neither have locations near me (I'm in central/East London). Perhaps I should try freecycle and hope for the best
Olly
Freecycle's probably the best bet. There is somewhere in East London that collects furniture for charity ... if I were at home I think I could find it, it's either on my pinboard or written down somewhere, but I'm at work at the moment! I'll try and have a look for it when I get home.
Tessa the Duchess
You could try these people http://www.lcrn.org.uk/ I used them when I was clearing out my MIL's house. Tessa
Olly
aha - found an entry in my electronic address book. Newham Homestore - 020 8519 9453. Haven't used them myself but a friend gave me this number a while back. Be aware that most charities won't take upholstered furniture (beds, sofas) unless they have fire-retardant labels. There is a Salvation Army shop in Walthamstow that takes furniture too.

Cate in NZ
When I moved out of our old home in Dartford I had a wardrobe, a table and a bureau that I needed to get rid of, and I contacted Scope (only because I'd had charity bag through the door requesting furniture donations) and they were great, came exactly when expected and were very friendly. The driver on that occasion said that they'd actually come from East London since that's where their furniture collection/ storage point is. Unfortunately though I don't have their phone number any more, but if you're interested I would have thought you find them on t'internet
Guest
Another good place to try is the free ads in your local newspaper... Also, it might be worth asking friends if they can make use of it. As a last resort you could try leaving it out the front, with a free to good home sign on it. For best results, put it out during a dry day. Keep your fingers crossed and the invisible fairies might come and take it away for you over night! Good luck, I hope you get the furniture shifted in time!
