How to encourage hens upstairs??

Recommended Posts

Hi

our cube was delivered Friday and we have just bought our 3 new girls home. Sorry if this has been asked before but how do we let the girls know that their bedroom is up the ramp??

Any ideas on how to encourage the hens up the cube ramp??

Also, as we will keep them in the run for the first week, do I need to give them a dust bath (ie bowl with dust) or will they make their own?

Many thanks

2 happy new hen owners!!

They should go up automatically. If not (as per mine) it was a hands-and-knee's commando raid through the munchin door. Got covered in poo and scratches and slung them in the door.

Some bamboo canes to discourage trying to perch on the wheels also helps.

Our cube arrived on Friday too :D

We had two who found the steps and took themselves off to bed, but two that just couldn't figure it out for themselves

We tried the torch to no avail, so in the end I had to craw commando style through the door and put them in, however, if you are going to do this make sure you get someone to hold the door shut once you are in as we had one cleaver girl who waited until my back was turned and launched herself from the cube and at the run door and hey presto she was out

I wouldn't mind but the first thing she did was run up to the patio, to where my hubby was stood, and started telling him all about it

It took me about 20 mins to catch her and pop her back in

Anyhow, the good news is that last night they all made it on their own - thank goodness :D

A plank of wood placed over the stairs can entice them up easier at first. We also had to do some lifting in for one silly bird and for a couple of ex-batts who were weaker, but after a few days they get there - good luck!
