Is it an egg? Is it a weird lump? (gross alert!)

Recommended Posts

I found this weird "lump" in the cube nesting box today. (obviously not the 20p... that is for size clarification!)

None of the chickens seem unduly bothered about anything. They have all taken to laying their eggs in the garden, rather than in the eglu itself, but occasionally I still find one in there.

This lump wasn't there yesterday, but appeared today. Anyone got any idea what it is - it is scary to think one of my girls could have "passed" this

It is a bit squishy (although I dare not squish it too much, through fear of what it might be!), and was found in a little puddle of what looked like egg yolk.

It feels more like cold chicken-breast (hope none of my girls are listening... they don't know I still eat chicken! ) than an egg.

Any ideas?

It looks like what is known as a "lash".

Every so often they shed the lining of the egg laying tackle and any associated gubbins. It looks like a rubber ( that's an eraser to our american Omleteers :D ) or a piece of cooked chicken.

No two look exactly the same.

Pics of similar occurrences below. I won't post the pictures directly in case you are about to eat/have just eaten. :D

Thanks for that!

I assume from a quick search on the forum (now knowing it's name!) that whilst not exactly "normal", it isn't anything to get too worked up about?

I had 4 eggs today, out of 5 chickens, and I don't think no.5 is laying yet, so I think all is fine!

I am glad mine looked as pleasant as it did - those ones you posted Egluntine were far more nasty!

Thanks!
