Lapinou
Got home today to two lovely eggs but one is a bit broken I'm assuming that it was the first egg and was broken by the second chicken as she laid hers...but how can we prevent this happening in the future? Or was it likely to be a one-off? I'll be a bit miffed if we only ever get one intact egg per day despite having three chickens laying! chickenanne
I think it'd be a one off only; very occasionally one of ours gets broken, but it is very occasionally. Assuming the shells are strong and not brittel or anything, and none of them are eating the eggs, I wouldn't worry. The more often you collect, the fewer chance of breakages.... but not so practical if you have anyhting else to do with your time!
Hen Watch
The shells can be thinner when they first start laying. I expect it will be fine in time. If I'm out all morning I can come home to 4 eggs sitting in the nestbox all perfect.
Abbey Road Girl
One of the first eggs mine laid was pecked but seemed to heal itself. I guessed that the membrane had not been broken, but to be on the safe side, I didn't use the egg. Sorry to have wasted it!
