buffie
Is the forum going to be a football free zone, we don't watch it here and I wondered if anyone will vanish because there is some football on the TV (so I've heard ) Let us know if you'll be a less frequent visitor and do you love it or hate it. Guest
I really do hate football - even when the boys get all enthused about it, I can feel my eyes glazing over.......

Guest
I have voted love it, but only because there wasn't an in between vote I have a vested interest in watching Ghana(I have drawn this in the sweep at work) Japan (Juliette has this in a competition run at school) and South Korea (this is Harrys team at school) and of course good only England. I think I may watch the Sweden games as well. There is a rather nice player in the team called Freddy Lundberg Well worth a look
buffie
Was going to have a fence sitting option (actually entered that but it didn't show ) then decided to leave it as a love or hate..get the intensity of feeling going BBx
Lesley
I'll have to click love it then - I don't, but will be watching some of it. Son and son-in-law both watch football - Carl hates it - I quite like it but won't cry if I miss some of it. Even Carl will take an interest in the England matches. Guest
I don't usually watch football - but, hey, it's the World Cup. Even if we don't win it, it's worth watching just to see Brazil play.
Hellcat
I am afraid I cannot bear football. Its not really the game I object to - its the ridiculous amount of hype that we have already had to put up with. The football (not just the world cup) disrupts all the normal tv offerings, interferes with listening to the radio and takes over all conversations outside of our house (as the hub hates it too - more a rugger man!). It is over hyped, far too expensive to follow as a matchgoer for the average person and causes far too much 'tribal' violence. The fees paid for these semi-literate cavemen are obscene. They provide a negative role model as youngsters all want to be footie players and earn a fortune and see these players as the way to do it, no need to study at school, just learn how to play footie. What was once a sport for the masses has been overtaken with greed and is now manipulated for monetary purposes. ...and another thing - I bet Wimbledon is re-scheduled on the BBC as a result of the footie! Hellcat
When did you last go to wimbledon? Its £10 open ticket which gets you in to the grounds, and all the outside courts. Only Centre and No. 1 court cost more. Sounds pretty open to the masses to me! Also, bear in mind, some footballers are paid hundreds of thousands in a month - most tennis players are lucky to get that in a year! The mens first prize for Wimbledon is about 80k I think - thats about Beckhams weekly income, isnt it?!

spacedhopper
Good news for you lot, I'll be less frequent. However I'll still catch up with everything! Thought you wasn't that bothered by England Martin ? Or is it just the world cup in general ? Got to admit it wont bother me one way or the other if England go out in the first round or go on to lift the world cup, i will not go to any victory parade either.Just cannot muster the enthusiasm to support Chelsea/Man Utd/Tottenham etc players,(was going to include "Ooops, word censored!"nal but not really applicable is it?). At the end of the day Martin i support a team thats dressed in red, and as long as all the Liverpool lads come home fit and healthy for the start of next season then i will be happy, roll on August. P.s. am quite looking forward to some of the other countries matches though, just will not get involved with all the bandwagon jumpers who despise football the rest of the time and then have flags and bunting out like lifetime football fans. Hellcat
JUST HAD THIS EMAIL SENT TO ME Notice issued: 12th May 2006 In order to assist other motorists in identifying potentially dangerous drivers, it's now compulsory for anyone with a lower than average IQ and driving ability to display a warning flag. The flag (comprising of a red cross on a white background) will be attached to the top of at least one door of their vehicle. For drivers of exceptionally low ability, additional flags are required. Well, really, not all fans are like this!

I thought the prize winnings for Wimbledon were more than that ? and what exactly do you see in the grounds, not the stars you go to see do you? i know you get good quality tennis on the outside courts, but its not what drags the masses in is it. Who would pay ten pounds to sit on a mound of grass and watch a big tele, may as well stay at home. The big stars earn a lot more than £80k a year in advertising alone, and dont forget not all footballers are on £100k a week, even in the prem. Dont believe all you read in the papers, clubs pay the top stars that amount (which yes it is ridiculous) but its not always for their football ability (see Beckham) but for how many shirts with their names on they can sell (see Beckham again), and Wimbledon is still for the oyty toyty masses, just try to get a ticket. Helen, i completely agree with that, i hate all this En gur land rubbish, i dont buy into it, i love football but my team is Liverpool and i dont buy into you must support your country or you are unpatriotic (see my post to Martin) with Liverpool it stares passions that have reduced me to tears, but the England brigade is a different kind of support on so many levels that i just dont want to be involved with. Hellcat
At last, something we can agree on! I checked the wimbledon prices. For the grounds, the top price is £17, and for the courts (centre, no 1 and no2) its average of £35, with Mens finals day on Centre court being the most expensive at £69. Go in the grounds during the first week and you will see plenty of stars - they have to play where they draw. It was years since I went but I saw Pat Cash (when he was the reigning champ) play Andre Agassi, The Grunter (Monica Seles?) play some american girl and watched a highly entertaining seniors match with John McEnroe and the french guy whose names escape me playing Jimmy Connors and another bloke. Not bad for (what was then) £10 Week two and theres less matches to play, so they tend to be on the 3 main courts, but they still have exhibition matches on and it really is a good vibe there. Cate in NZ
I'm not bothered by football, but it will be on in my house simply because hubby & son are very into their football. But they participate in the game at all levels, both observing and playing. Son plays in a sunday league team, and for school, hubby is a qualified coach & ref. They're passionate about supporting Charlton, and will be supporting England during the World Cup. I agree with a lot that's been said about overpaid footballers and so, but football is a truly accessible sport. OK if all you want to do is watch Man U at Old Trafford every Saturday it'll cost you big time, but it's really cheap to watch some of the smaller, more local teams play, and everyone can participate in playing, from children kicking a ball around a park, to the sunday league matches. And it's cheap to play, unlike some other sports. Son's £30 a year to register with club & league, after that £2 a match. Bargain, compared to his tennis lessons that worked out in the region of £20 an hour We had to drop those, just ridiculous . Thinking in terms of children & exercise that's all to the good surely So, no I'll not be watching personally because it's just not my thing, but "Come on England"
