Things to do in Broadstairs?

Recommended Posts

The italian icecream shop is still there as far as i know. We are off there for a long weekend next weekend.

Where are you staying?

We tend to stay on the beach, there are some nice restaurants and folk week is sometime in the summer forget exactly when. Rock pooling and when the tide is out you can walk a long way round the numerous outcrops.

forgot to add last time we stayed for a week one day was firework night on the beach, it may have been during folk week.

Thanks Barbara - we are borrowing a friends flat for the week. (Mon-Thurs) - we love the icecream shop and found the smallest cinema in the world!:lol:

We love Ramsgate as the beach is not too crowded and all the facilities are so close. It is not very pretty, but we enjoy seeing the ferries coming in and going out. DH's cousins are from Broadstairs. There are quite a few things to do in and around there.

We went to Margate once. I hated the crowds on the beach and the pavements, very difficult to even walk, but there was a rock-making shop which did displays which you could watch. In a rmeote area though, we found a Roman museum and a very special Shell Grotto which I would recommend as it is totally amazing.

I hope you have a lovely time anyway!

well I live down this neck of the woods! I lived with my parents in Broadstairs for many years. It is a shame you are not coming the following week because that is when Folk week starts, which is a big tradition.

You could go on the St Peters village tour, which runs every Thursday. On Wednesday there will be the weekly fireworks and a gig at the local bandstand.

Morellis and Chiapinis are still going strong on the sea front. I would have to say Morellis is best because I went to school with them (!) but try both. The 'kitsch' look is all part of the tradition! This is the first Morellis that ever opened - back in the 50s - and so they have pretty much kept it 'as is'.

What else - well a trip to Joss Bay - that was always regarded as the best beach when I was a kid. You can walk along the coast to North Foreland Lighthouse and stop for lunch at the Captain Digby (been a while since I've been there, so I hope it is still good - let me know if it isn't .... we know the owners of there too!!).

Unfortunately Dickens House has now been bought  and is no longer open to the public.

If you fancy a little drive pop over to Herne Bay and visit Wildwood - it is often on the news for all success they are having with their breeding program of endangered species. If you fancy a cuppa we are only down the road!

Osteria Posilippo is a fantastic restaurant, although sometimes the service can be a bit 'abrupt' - apparently it is all part of the charm. I personally don;t see it but I do love the food there!

Hope that has given you a few ideas. If I think of anything else I'll let you know :D

you mean the flea pit and it is affectionally known! Again the owner has sold it but insisted it remain a going concern :D

Oh and the shell grotto that Ginette refers to is in Cliftonville, up Grotto Hill. It is an amazing place

Thanks everyone for the ideas! I'm glad the cinema is still going - it did make us laugh - especially when I went to the loo and found that it was behind the screen - I had visions of my silhouette being displayed to the audience :oops::lol:

Depending on how far you want too travel, and what you would like to see:

Sandwich a few miles away is a beautiful town full of historic buildings - lovely river walk, and boat trips. Last week they were advertising trips to see seals!

However, I visited the Salutation gardens, and was rather disappointed, though I guess they are still restoring it to its original plan.

If you have children, then Druidstone Park near Blean is good.

I plan to visit Goodnestone gardens tomorrow with the kids. There is also Quex Park house, museum and gardens at Birchington.

I'm having a think, as I'm taking the kids on outings every Friday during the holidays (I live on the border of Broadstairs and Ramsgate).

Sometimes at Ramsgate Harbour there is the Grand Turk ship - but not sure if that is there yet.

Also, how about an open topped bus ride? That goes around the coast I believe - though haven't tried it yet.

I tried Crompton Tower Museum last year, but dissapointed with the amount of stuff there.

Sarre Windmill is on the way to Canterbury - I haven't been personally, but I heard it was good - and kids enjoyed it.

rare breeds type place by South Eastern Water Gardens - on the roundabout between Sandwich and Deal.

I've been to Sarre Windmill. It was interesting as you climb all through the mill.

There's also an RAF museum nearby which was very good and free, I think, but I'm afraid I can't remember where exactly it was.

:D thank you!

Although I was brought up with aircraft-mad people, my father having been in the RAF, an aircraft museum would not be my first choice of places to visit. However, I really enjoyed this one because it's more than just planes. There are excerpts from diaries, letters and personal things like that which help to bring history to life and give me a glimpse into some real lives. I would recommend a visit there.
