Bare minimum cleaning regime.

Recommended Posts

I need to write down care routine for my mum who is looking after the girls while we are away for a week.

I was thinking, empty droppings tray fill up glug and grub.

Do you think the run will be ok for a week, it has aubiose in.

Mum has a very bad back and I don't really think she would be able to climb in.

Will it be ok not being washed for a week, I ormally wash the roosting bars every day and poo pick the run every 2 - 3 days.

Mine routine would be very similar, but I only wash the roosting bars once a week. The poo slips down onto the trays. I have lined my trays with newspaper and then aubiose and it is amazingly simple to keep clean.

I haven't turned my pen out yet  It has about 2-3 inches of Aubiose in it with the trashed grass. It LOOKS clean, and they dust bath happily in new fresh piles of Aubiose that I put in every other day. The pen is 9x9, so a lot of space.

I am going to rake put the whole lot at the weekend and have the roof off the cube for a good scrub.

I hope no one comes on here and tells me that I am not doing it properly, but my hens are clean, smell clean, look clean, happy and healthy, come running to me whenever I go down there and they start to make a lots of noise!

This morning they are all sitting plumped up looking like broody hens, they look so content and fluffy, they seem to have grown enormously in 2 weeks!

One or two of them are crouching today.................

I change the Auboise on my run floor once a month. So your girls should be fine.

I clean the eglu and roosting bars at the weekend so only once a week........... ish......

Feed/water check and collect eggs daily + empty the poo tray mid week should be fine IMO. Remember at this time of year with long days, you get much less poo in the tray than in Winter when they are roosting when it gets dark at 4pm.

Hello

I am off for a week soon. I have someone coming to let them out/close them for bed and I shall ask if they can do the poo tray once that week. I will have to do a very good clean out when I am back but I am sure that they will be fine, may be a bit more smelly than usual lol.

If we were as disease resitant as hens, the NHS might be very relieved.

Of course most of us want to consider our neighbours and keep the smell down. Without sticking to a strict cleaning regime (though bunging in garlic powder regularly and using aubiose), poo isn't a big problem.

I was really pleasantly surprised that poo hardly happears in herefordshire (thanks to My Fair Lady).

I would just clean it out before you go and then leave it. I'm a slob and only do the droppings trays weekly anyway. I have hemcore in mine and it doesnt smell.

I agree - and I do the same. Mine seem to do barely any poos at night, far more in the day so my poo trays are never that full.

I have to say, I can't see very much poo in my run, it has either broken down or disappeared into the aubiose, there is certainly no smell or flies. They only free range out of their pen for a couple of hpurs a day, but I can see those poos!

I would maybe provide your mum with a spray bottle of water with some tea tree and citronella oil in it. Great for keeping down smells (and bugs/flies!)

We're off on holiday for two weeks soon, and we'll probably leave a bottle for the chap that comes in to see to our flock. I think he'll probably have to empty the poo trays a couple of times during that fortnight, and clean the nest boxes out a bit more often as we have little sods that poo in there on a daily basis  Other than that, just fill the glugs and grubs and chuck some treats in as and when!
