Bleeding chicken

Recommended Posts

I have just been out to my chickens and poor little freckle has been pecked so much she is bleeding - it has only happened in the last hour. She is bottom of the pecking order and was pecked a little when we first got them but has been okay for the last 3 weeks. I have managed to get her into a box and cleaned as much of the blood off as possible and added some teatree oil to help prevent any infections, I will spray her with anti peck spray later. i have left her in the box with pellets and water - is there anything else I should do? Also when should I put her back in with the others? Thank you

She has a quite few feathers missing from her back and is bleeding from where they have come out, I don't think she has had her skin pecked but its hard to tell, it probably looked a lot worse than it was (blood always does with anyone) but I am worried about her going back in.

I think the bleeding had stopped when we were trying to clean her.

Hi - I have just been checking up on the forum as one of my girls is being bullied a bit this morning.

I have had 4 ex bats for 3 weeks now - they're still sorting their pecking order. The smallest and least feathered of them all has had a bald tail since I got her but she is already growing feathers back well. However this morning, the others have pecked her bare tail and it has been bleeding. Generally I prefer to let them sort these things out themselves but they will not leave her alone.

So, I've separated her for now but am not sure whether to put her back in with them today. I have treated her with tea tree oil to stop infections and possibly stop the pecking. I would get some violet spray but it'll take a few days to get here.

I was just wondering what you did in the end?

Anyone else got any advice?

Thanks

our big girl Ella has been pecked on the bum by my maran (attracted to the blood), we have been treating the affected area for some time with purple spray, tea tree oil etc.

We took her to the vet (for another problem) and they said it was better for us to cover the wound with something (which is what we had been doing), we clean the wound daily and then cover it with a small piece of gauze attached with some surgical tape, we then spray the gauze with purple spray.

This might be an idea for you, as the area is covered it helps to prevent further pecking as you do not want the other hen making the wound worse.

I did actually wonder about putting a plaster on her to cover the redness and then quickly thought - 'I can't do that' but it seems it wasn't so daft after all!

She's been out on her own all morning and has had a dust bath since I treated her with the tea tree oil - it seems that the dirt has made her tail a lot less red for now so I put her back in with the others. They are leaving her alone but she does seem to be quite scared to be back with them - I think they've been giving her a harder time than I realised. I think she is also doing a full-on moult which can't be easy on her.

Anyway I'll try the plaster (well gauze & surgical tape) and in the meantime get some purple spray.

Thanks ever so much for your advice.
