Guest
I saw this on the yahoo ex batt forum and am just the messenger, you need to contact the people concerned if you can help... Hi all Just wondering if anyone has room for any more battery hens? There is a farm local to me (Newton Le Willows - in between Manchester and Liverpool) and the farmer is retiring. He is slaughtering all his chickens on the 9th August (short notice but I only just found out). They have not got to the end of their comercial usefullness but as he's closing down he just wants rid so he is willing to sell them for rescue for £1.50 each. More than the going rate and completely ruthless of him but he says they're worth more because they'll still lay. Anyway, there's a rescue being arranged by some local animal lovers and I just said I'd see if anyone could give some a home. They are raising some funds so you could maybe haggle the price, I'm not sure, but if anyone's interested I can get you the contact number. I could maybe help with transport depending on mileage etc. I will now supply you with the numbers of the people involved in this rescue: Sue: 01942726141 Debbie: 07756746965 Thanks Becky Becky's mail adress is Becky_joc15@yahoo.com if you want to contact her about her offer of transport. Ms Marple
Can I? I don't know so advice sought here. I have one Eglu and three girls in it - if you recall I started with 4. But they only way would be to have two?? Too many surely? Wouldn't they fight? Yet I would like to help
daj198
If your current eglu is a mark 2 and your current three are small then you might be able to get two. You'd have to get temporary accomadation to introduce them though. There might be someone nearby who would be willing to lend you a spare eglu for a few weeks. Guest
because the ex batts would be weak and not accustomed to life outside, it's a good idea to have seperate accommodation- at least to start with, until they regain their strength and also to make sure they don't pass on any lice or whatever to your existing girls. That's not say they WILL have lice, ours didn't, but you never know. i wish I could take some on but we're full to capacity at the moment. If we didn't have Bea (who is disabled) it might be easier but we just can't. Hope someone can.
Ms Marple
It is a mark 2 eglu. Chicken sizes? A Warren (gingernut ranger) , a bluebelle and a daisybelle. I am not really sure if they class as big or small. All hybrids so I am thinking small. I had a quick look on Ebay to see if any Eglus were for sale around Greater Manchester/ Cheshire /Lancs but they were all Mids or South. I even looked at wooden ones - but I am not sure security wise. Maybe at this point in time I am not ready Don't like to think of them being killed for no good reason. Guest
if you want to borrow this I'd be more than happy to lend it to you until you can mix your girls? we used it for Bea for a short time but now she has a pet carrier to shelter in during the day and she sleeps with the other girls at night. I'd need it back eventually as we're thinking of getting some quail and using it for them but that won't be for a good while yet. Let me know if you want to borrow it. It's a dog kennel and we bought it brand new. It does the job as temporary accommodation. http://www.liverpoolpoet.talktalk.net/newrun3.jpg http://www.liverpoolpoet.talktalk.net/bea3170208.jpg this is what we use for her now http://www.liverpoolpoet.talktalk.net/herb2.jpg

Faye&Ant
I really would love to take on ex-batts and it is something we have discussed but right now we only room for bantams and dont have any suitable seperate accomodation to take any bigger girls on, also Cheshire is miles away from here Im really sorry I can't help - I hope they all get their freedom
Janey4
O how awful! Im just outside Newton-le-Willows but have already organised my ex batts to come next week and am already up to my limit deciding to get 4 instead of 3. Hope they homes for at least some of them. BeckyBoo
How awful, and how greedy of the farmer I can't take any more I just haven't got room and we're miles away. Hopefully someone will be able to take at least some of them, maybe if they got onto the local radio station, but then again, it would be awful if people took them purely to help out, even if it was with the best of intentions, ex-batts do need extra care - it's such a dilemma Mrs B
