spratly0
i agree winning lots of medals at one games is fantastic but to be at the top of your sport over a time span of 16 + years is just legendary!
gooner.girl
Got to be Jesse Owens hasn't it?!?! How many other people have broken 3 world records and tied a 4th in the space of 45 odd minutes?! And in olympian terms despite having to overcome racial discrimination he managed to win 4 gold medals in the '36 Olympics. Jonathon Edwards is still my all time athletics hero though! ubereglu
I think there should be a 'greatest olympian' in different fields, as for swimming he wins hands down, but then in swimming you have the chance to enter so many events and HE IS AMAZING in the pool...but 8 medals might be a stretch, did anyone see the heat with him in today where he came second? I think that Steve Redgrave deserves the title for rowing though.

Phonix
Im a big fan of Beth Tweddle - she has done alot for British gymnastics. Olympic gymnastics seems to be a nasty business in some countries and for her to do so well for us over so many years in the Championships etc is fab! xXx
Ain't Nobody Here
I agree, you can't compare the different sports. He is fantastic in his sport but can't be said to be better than other athletes from other disciplines. I'm a Steve Redgrave fan too but also think Lance Armstrong was incredible.
