Pregnant cat, dont know how, advice please UPDATE in labour!

Recommended Posts

Our cat is pregnant, but how?

We dont live near anyone else with an un-neutered Tom.

We were quite (too) relaxed about having Jasmine spayed because we live on a farm with no immediate neighbours. I really have no idea how far she must have wandered to find a mate. She has always been a semi ferral she loves to wander into the neighbouring fields and stalk birds and rabbits (much to my disgust!) So shes quite thin because she is constantly active and doesnt seem to eat much.

What do we do now!

The kids are so excited

OOh She is in labour

Unneutered females will always find a boyfriend regardless of where they live!

Feed her plenty of good quality kitten food & keep her confined when she is looking like she's ready to have them.

It's very important that you handle the babies early & make sure they're well socialised, even if you can't handle mom, she will let you take the babies and handle them. But you must keep her confined otherwise she will just carry them off & disappear with them. I would get her neutered when the babies are about 6 weeks old.

Thank you ,

we will have to work out how to keep her in, without confining out two dogs and our other(22 year old) cat

She has been a very friendly lap cat this evening, until the old english sheepdog chased her off! Poor Jasmine.

I would hope that the kittens could be nice cuddly cats. Our old cat is completely in control of our two large dogs. We just need to think it all out.

it's more likely that her boyfriend travelled quite a way to see her, than the other way around! Toms looking for a mate will go quite some distance (and sometimes get lost in the process).

How exciting. Aunty E. is the forum expert on kittens and kittening, she's been through the whole process several times. You could search on here for one of her threads, but I expect she'll be along sometime soon.

Like now, although not in the best shape for advice as have just dropped one of the Maus off for a c-section after 12 hours in hard labour and quite a lot of bleeding (and no sleep for me). That's my scare tactics, but mostly cats are great at kittening, and will manage with no intervention. It's useful to know how pregnant she is (vets are often rubbish at this), and there are lots of great sites which give tips on how to tell if she's going into labour, just google for them. If you want the kittens to be cuddly cats, make sure you get them onto real food early, and make sure they know that it comes from you. Lots of handling and playing, and you should have some nice friendly kittens. If you have other animals, she'll need a safe and secluded place to kitten in, where she won't be disturbed by them, with a big cardboard box lined with newspaper and old towels. If you start setting that up now, she may even decide to have them there rather than on your bed

Start feeding her kitten food now, especially if she's skinny, it will help the kittens get to a healthy weight and their mum to provide lots of lovely milk. Obviously worth getting an emergency number from your vet too for when the time comes, but if you hunt around on the internet there are loads of great articles (and videos) on cat birth. Good luck!

Neither did we, particularly since she had had a contraceptive jab. Sadly all but one of the kittens died, and Cleo had to be speyed as her uterus had ruptured. Probably for the best given her past history, but rather messes up any breeding plans we had.

What a rubbish rubbish day.

So sorry to hear this, you must be really upset.

Thanks for all your advice everyone, I am going to hunt out a suitable box, although she seems to have taken to the greenhouse today. Nice and warm I suppose
