SAD - Seasonal Affective Disorder

Recommended Posts

Thanks Buffie :)

My OH has just looked at the site with me and reckons I have been a sufferer for a while. I am really good at denial though. I am going to give it a go.

Today is another typical day here. Normally we can see the hills across the valley - not a sign and no likelyhood of the low clous dissipating..

I am back to work tomorrow after 8 weeks summer hols which undoubtedly adds to it, but I love my job. We are going diving in Egypt at half-term so that is something bright to look forward to.

My OH bought me a Phillips dawn simulator alarm clock for Christmas last year and I am sure that it helped me to get up on the dark mornings. I was also diagnosed with an underactive thyroid in January this year and being treated for that made me feel better.

One of the biggest differences last winter was having to go out to see the chickens several times a day because that gave me something to do as well as getting me into the natural light more often. Hurrah for chickens

Hi Jules

Just locked your post about lumie clocks so we stick to one thread. The type of light depends on your needs. You can have a dawn simulator (that's the one you mentioned) or a therapy light. They are different and I use both. The simulator literally simulates dawn and light hitting the retina, making you feel more awake :D

Therapy lamps give you natural light (without harmful UV) in a daily delivered 'dose' around 10,000 lux. So during darker days of the year and winter you benefit by getting the light you would ordinarily be deprived of.

Hope this helps..

Can those of you who have one of these convince me they are worth buying, & maybe advise of the best/cheapest place to buy one.

I'm looking at getting the middle priced one, which has a radio on it, & a clock dial with fingers. If you have one of these can you tell me if it ticks or not, as I can't stand ticking xclocks in my bedroom!

it will be my very early Christmas present

Jules

I bought the more expensive one because I preferred the style to the other one - but no radio (this was last year so perhaps they have extended the range - I'll add a photo of mine)

It has been worth every penny! and no ticking! The clock I had before used to make a slight tick every 15 seconds....it drove me mad.

It is so easy to set and to use. Changing the time or alarm time takes seconds. You can choose between a 30 minute sunrise and a 15 minute sunrise and it also has a night light facility which is really low but enough if you need to get up in the night.

I have this one

After reading this post, I have decided I should invest in something like this for my office at work. I work in a brick room with no windows and don't know whether it is sunny or dull at any time of the year. I wouldn't mind so much for myself but I now have an employee and feel very un-health and safety conscious.

I can't work out whether this would do at £35 or if I have to go to the other extreme and get one of these at over £200.

Can anyone tell me the difference please? (I wouldn't want to pay more than around £100 at the moment :( )

Thanks Buffie, I have spent ages looking for this model's lux rating and was just about to give up when I found it on another shop with this description:

Light therapy offers a convenient and effective way of making up for the lack of light, without medication. The Wellness Light uses very bright lights (Over 10,000 lux) to simulate natural sunlight, while eliminating the dangerous UV rays contained in sunlight. Lux is the measurement for the brightness of the light. For example: a sunny summer day has about 50,000 lux, the regular light inside a building only 500 lux.

I think I'll give it a go. If, for some reason, it isn't 10,000 is there any reason why it can't be on for longer to make up the *time* as we are at our desks for 8 hours a day and I don't mind it being on - we aren't generally going anywhere :D

A very interesting read,

thank you all for sharing.

I have suffered with deppression for a few years and this year have also been diagnosed as Bi-polar. I have been really worried about the upcoming dark months and one of the reasons I have so loved having my chickens so far is the time it makes me spend in real daylight, even when "down". Their clucking is very soothing.

If think I get abit of SAD on top of all my usual head stuff so if you all think they really work I think it may be worth me investing in one.

Do you know if they do any versiond for use in the car, or that are more portable as I don't work at a desk, I move around all the time.

Thank you.

So I took the plunge and invested in a Lumie clock and desklamp. Both were from ebay, so saving a considerable amount on the new cost, and both are in "as new" condition - boxes, instructions etc.

The desklamp has arrived today (the first sunny day we've had in ages!) and, apart from being rather large, looks very well on my office desk and entirely in keeping with a professional environment. I'll let you know how I get on working with it when we go back to dull days :D

The clock is wonderful! It arrived on Friday, so I set it up and played over the weekend. It's the 200 model with variable sunrise/sunset functions, and I've yet to be awake to see the end of the sunset :D . I set it on the shortest sunrise and it is definitely a much more pleasant way to be awakened than a loud bleeping alarm. The only slight drawback is that fat Puddy sees the first hint of light as a sign that she should jump on the human and demand breakfast  (the diet is making her hungry), so I can only use the shortest setting.

Many thanks for all the advice and understanding from everyone that has posted. Now all I need to do is find the snooze button on a hungry cat

My Philips clock died yesterday, the light came on then refused to go off even after being reset and unplugged.

I am about to order a Lumie, we are taking the Philips to our local repairer under it's 2 year gaurentee so hopefully we will have a spare, i think that my son would benefit from one too.

I didn't sleep well last night because i was so aware that we only had an alarm set on our digital radio and it hadn't been used for a while and I couldn't see a clock all night, I hate not knowing what time it is :( Had to get up to turn the really loud alarm off on the otherside of the room in the dark and remembered how bad it feels to be woken up by an alarm in the dark
