Elderly cat breathing difficulties when purring

As a newbie I am learning all the time! I thought I would share some of the comments I have found useful from the forum so far and one I have invented myself (well I am sure someone else does it but I have not found it on the forum yet!). I am not trying to teach anyone to such 's but though other Newbies would find them useful.

 

After reading a post on the forum I now realise we have to keep them quiet until 7.30am by law so I am trying to get mine into a routine. I leave for work at 7.30 so am getting the used to being let out then as they are always very quiet in the eglu (well so far! )

 

Another couple of tricks I have learnt on the forum include:

 

1. Putting an upturned terracotta pot in the nest overnight to stop them sleeping there and poohing all in it, as it is more difficult to clean thant the pooh tray. This gets them used to roosting at night and them laying in the nest. They were a little confused at first but have settled happily to roosting. It might also prevent them getting broody too often?

 

2. Putting a square piece of old lino under the nest so you can lift it all out which makes this easier to clean and the chooks are OK with this. (I have cut out two so I can replace it quickly in the winter by swapping them just in case it's raining (although it never rains here!!!! - well it might she says as she looks out at the downpour outside!) and then I can clean the other with the eglu snug and clean.

 

Lastly, one I have designed myself - I also cut out a single piece of lino to fit the pooh tray. I went to clean this today and it took me a total of 1 minute to lift it out, empty it in the compost bin, wipe it and return it. This also keeps the tray dry until the full weekend clean. (again I have cut out 2) I found this was much quicker than cleaning the pooh tray itself.

 

Nagging bit!! Sorry What a minute - This is the concerned friend section! If you are one of the younger members and decide to use the lino get someone to help as you will need to use a Stanley knife to cut it and these are incredibly sharp. I was a little nervous but if you always cut away downwards it should be OK - I am still here! LEcture over !

 

 

Don't know if any of this is useful to you but I thought I would share my experiences.

 

I haven't yet worked out the best way to poop clean the run! Mine are currently on grass and I can't get into the run easily. I might try spraying it with the hose when they go to bed? I think eventually I will have to put slabs down or build a walk in run! Who knows!

 

I had better start packing my bag for school as I am back to work i the morning - YUK!

The only thing I will say though is that I have read that lino can be a hiding place for red mite so you might need to watch that.

I intend to swap the lino over at each empty so I can check it each time but I would hate to get red mite. I don't want little vampires feeding on my girlies!!!

I like the lino idea, but what I do is spray the pooh tray with Pam and it works a treat. I shudder to think what I might cut off if I was to use something sharp.

I should have relized you might not have the same brand name in the UK. Pam is a no stick vegetable cooking spray used in baking so your baked goods don't stick to the pan. I use this instead of butter when baking.

Is Monster Munch the pickled onion snack? Although I do love anything pickled.

I havent read it on the forum but I suspect its similar to the nusiance laws for noise, i.e you cant be drilling and hammering at all hours of the day because thats a nuisance. I beleive the hours are 7.30am-11pm. Its the same with dogs, if they bark a lot you can be required to make the be quiet. Not sure how that one works but there you go.

 

As a Chicken isn't nearly as loud as a dog, well, unless its a Cockeril obviously, then I can't see noise being a huge issue.
