I am a bit unsure how much Diatom to use, how and where to use it. I have put some in their dust bath and when I clean out the cube I have made a puffer bottle (Heath Robinson) out of a small water bottle with a small hole drilled in the top of the lid and puff it around the grooves and crevices inside the cube.

From things I've read on the forum am I right in thinking Diatom is more effective against red mite than red mite powder?

Are there any other ways I can use DE?

Many thanks in advance for your replies.

Nicola

I mix 1lb DE to every 50lbs of food. Since starting to keep chickens I've starting supplementing my own diet. I mix 1 tablespoon DE (food grade) in my morning yogurt. It has helped to lower my blood pressure and my cholesterol.

That's interesting, where do you buy it? I have high cholerterol and I take tablets, I would rather take something natural.

I'm no doctor I'm just following information I got doing research on DE for my girls. So first I would say do your research and talk to your doctor. I do get my DE from MYPETCHICKEN and the brand is called Perma-Guard.

After a nasty redmite infestation in my cube I take no chances and, wearing rubber gloves, sort of smear the diatom on every possible surface inside the cube with my hands. I then put far to much in every crevice where the things hide. One advantage after doing it is the chickens come out covered in it in the morning, which must help prevent them getting lice, etc. :)
