tweecy
Hi, Don't know if this is of any use to anyone. After saying that my ex-batts. had been getting on well since I got them (well it was 12 months ago, so I've been lucky). Paprika was not well on Sunday, breathing not good, and not attacking sweetcorn with her usual vigour. Put her in a crate and kept her in the conservatory overnight in order to keep an eye on her and isolate from the others. Her breathing was awful - a scary rattle, and when she managed to go to sleep, she was waking herself up sneezing. Her crop was still full on Monday, she had passed nothing and eaten/drank very little. So, off to the vets Monday morning. She was not examined, given an antibiotic jab, and I was given some Panacur and told to get on with it. If no better by Wednesday (today) to go back. (btw, worming a chicken with a panacur syrings is nigh on impossible). I think the vet was giving panacur in order to cover for gapeworm possibility, although, thanks to this forum, I didn't think it was, so didn't feel so bad when most of it went over her nose and beak. Anyway, not much better, so back I went. Saw a different vet at the practice. He was a star! He examined her, told me he wasn't happy about her full crop, gave her some Baytril. He didn't bat an eyelid when I started clucking the theme tune to The Archers to her. Told me to go back tomorrow so he could check the crop, and said he would do something with liquid paraffin if it wasn't clear - I missed the full details, as I was too busy grinning at him. He told me that quite a few hens in the area have respiratory problems at the moment and there seems to be something going round - probably the vile weather we've had. I know Paprika isn't out of trouble yet, but I have found a vet that I have confidence in. If anyone wants details PM me.

tweecy
Thanks folks, Paprika 'rounded the corner' on Saturday, and was eating like a horse by Sunday. She is now back with the others and loads better. I think she rather liked living in the conservatory though.
