quickcluck
Hi guys. Am about to do the wing clipping thing. I know I should have done it long before now, but they haven't been able to come out due to many dog sitting weeks.... However the time is nigh.............. Can I ask. Do normal scissors actually cut them OK? On the first snip?? Am a bit anxious about it all to be honest...... and is the general concensus to clip the left wing? Thanks K
Egluntyne
There is a "How to" **here**. I would use a pair of good kitchen scissors. Tiny sewing scissors won't be up to the job. Good luck.

bokbokbok
I watched it being done by Chook Man and then when I was de-lousing etc and had them in my arms anyway - did them again myself. It is just like cutting cardboard - no biggy really . .. once you have done it once it wont fizz on you.
MedusA
Like you, I was really nervous the first time. It really is a piece of cake and nothing to worry about. It's easiest done with 2 people - one to hold chicken securely so the other can spread the wing and do the cutting. Good luck!
Gamebird
I clip the left wing because I found it easier to hold the chicken under my left arm with her head to the front while Hubby stretched the wing and I cut it with my right hand. However, I don't think it matters that much which wing you clip. I found this youtube video quite useful (ignore that chap with the beard who is pretty useless at holding chickens ) It does give you an idea of how easy it is and not at all painful for the bird. I was really nervous at first but if I can do it anybody can.
mostin
We did it (clip the wings that is) for the first time today, and last week my hubby wouldn't even pick a chicken up. We were nervous of cutting the wrong feathers but as I held each bird and he spread the wing out, it is really obvious which are the correct ones to cut. We used a sharp pair of kitchen scissors. Didn't think we'd have to do it yet but our two new girls flew out of their pen this morning and Dolly made it a good 15ft before she landed . Action had to be taken immediatedly but they've already started a trend. The two we had already, who have never even flapped before, have been flapping on to the top of the eglu run all day . It looks as if there's some sort sort of oldies v newbies competiton going on.
