At least you got the option to consider what to do. Our lovely 8 yr old cat who slept on my daughters bed every night went from being totally fine to having a fit and being dead in 10 mins. Not a drawn out illness for him I guess, but by the time I had the out-of-office vet on the phone he was dead

 

This was almost a year ago and he was just such part of the family of course we would have paid any vets bills need to keep him alive if we could.

I too have had the daft "when do the chickens meet the pan?" questions and even my mother asked why I'd taken insurance on the cats . I generally fnd the sweet smile and response of "If you'd ever loved anything, you'd understand" put an end to it (though I've not yet tried that one on my mother )

 

I love some of the responses to the "why no children?" question and will try to remember them (especially the shoes on the cat ). I remember some woman at a posh dinner a few years ago asking me if I didn't feel unfulfilled as a woman as I had no children? I pretended to give the matter consideration before I said "Actually, no" and ignored her for the rest of the evening. What a question from a complete stranger

 

Suppose I should confess though that I'd have probably paid for the guinea pig too ...

How rude and socially inept are people who ask delving questions about other peoples apparent decision not to reproduce. As if t is any of their busuness.

 

It is as well to remember that not everyone is childless through choice.

I have to say that I would never make any comment about people not having children. I have friends who are desperate for a baby and they find it very difficult to talk about - especially to strangers. Also, I completely go along with people who have just decided not to have children. I totally understand their decision and wouldn't dream of accusing them of being unfulfilled.

my old cat is over 20 now, I would pay to keep her happy & comfortable, luckily she is fit & well. her sister died last year and I dread to think how much she cost me in that year, I dont begrudge a penny of it, I hope your old freind gets better soon
