Lydia
Four years and never a sign, then about half an hour ago there he was, bold as brass, near the run! And my girls were all out free ranging They're all fine and accounted for thank goodness! They are happily mooching about their runs as if nothing has happened ....... and I am a shaking, quivering wreck feeling awful for putting them at risk. We all know the risks and there's always warnings on here but you think it'll never happen to you! Please peoples don't ever ever get complacent. Mr Fox is out there and can and will strike at any time. We have been very very lucky on this occasion - a split second later and Volty would have been dinner I think. It won't happen again. Off to get a foxwatch now.
theherd123
A close shave indeed!
ScottishMike
I guess many of us here live in 'suburbia', because out in the countryside Mr Fox gets shot if half a chance arises I'm in 'suburbia' but we do get the odd fox prowling around the area - rarely see them, but we do occasionally see them, so they are propbably here most of the time. MedusA
I wasn't as fortunate as you, Lydia. I lost one of my girls to a fox before becoming hyper-vigilant. Foxes now visit my garden every day on the off-chance! Now my girls have to stay in their walk-in run, unless I am in the garden with them to supervise free-ranging. Please remember that the Fox-watch is only a deterrant, not a failsafe method of keeping your girls safe. Extreme vigilance is the only way to outwit Mr Fox. I'm glad you found out before anything awful happened.
Lydia
Don't worry, I know how lucky we were and I'm so sorry you lost a hen. I will never let them freerange unsupervised again even with the Foxwatch in operation. Not worth the risk.
Ain't Nobody Here
What a shock that must have been . I'm so glad your girls are all safe and you had a warning rather than a tragedy .

Gamebird
Gosh, you were lucky not to lose any of your girls. Electric fencing has worked for me. The girls now free range all day unsupervised. If maintained correctly it is 100% foxproof.
